Kraig's Installation Guide for DAZ Studio

Here are some steps for installing DAZ Studio on the PC. These instructions are for first-time installers and for people installing a new version of DAZ Studio. Step-by-step instructions with screen shots are given in this tutorial.

You can download DAZ Studio from C-Net's website, www.download.com, or from DAZ 3D's page, SUPPORT –> Downloads/Updates –> DAZ Studio. This is the link on DAZ 3D: DAZ Studio Installer Download Page

You should make sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements for DAZ Studio. Please see the DAZ Studio Requirements Page.

The installer is an executable file. It is strongly recommended that you download the installer first. Choose to 'SAVE' the installer rather than to 'RUN.' This better ensures that you get the whole installer without any interruptions during the download over the internet.

First Time install vs. New Version Install

On our site, you will see the option for a 'content' and a 'no content' version of DAZ Studio. If you already have DAZ Studio installed on your computer with your own content, it is strongly recommended that you download the 'NO CONTENT' version from our website. This will keep your existing content from being changed. The version available on C-Net's Website (www.download.com) includes the free content.

Your installer will start with the name 'DAZStudio' followed by the version and possibly 'no content.'

For example, the name may look like this:

DAZStudio_2.3.3.146_no_content_win.exe DAZStudio_2.3.3.146_win.exe

You may find that your version number is later than the above. That's okay. DAZ 3D updates DAZ Studio frequently, so the version number will probably be different in the future.

Begin the Installation

It's recommended that you disable any antivirus or firewall before you begin the installation of DAZ Studio. This is standard for installing software. Also, make sure that DAZ Studio itself and other programs are not running.

Double-click the DAZ Studio installer. You should shortly see this image:

The installer has launched. If you already have DAZ Studio installed, then you will be prompted to uninstall the existing version. If this is the first time to install DAZ Studio on your computer, then you won't see the next few screens and you should just skip past them.

If you already have DAZ Studio installed, you'll see this message below. Press 'Yes.'

It is important to uninstall the previous version. Two versions of DAZ Studio at the same time are *not* recommended and can cause DAZ Studio not to function correctly. Press 'Yes' to proceed with the uninstall. This does *not* remove content (unless you are using the content version of the installer).

Now you should see the uninstall proceed.

Once the uninstall completes, press 'OK' to continue.

Install DAZ Studio

Now that the previous version is uninstalled (or not uninstalled for first time installers), the installer will now guide you through the installation of DAZ Studio. Click 'Next' to proceed.

First, we need you to look at the license agreement. If you accept the agreement, press 'Next.'

Next, you see the 'Tellware' agreement. In exchange for this marvelous, free software, we would like you to tell two people you know about it.

Now you can choose the installation path. It is strongly recommended that you use the default path. Only experienced users should choose a different path.

NOTE: Windows Vista users should click the browse button and select the Studio folder manually. This resolves an issue in Vista with protected files in the 'Program Files' folder. Do this even if the correct path is displayed.

Now you see the option to have a shortcut for DAZ Studio added to your desktop. Leave it on 'yes' or change to 'no' as you decide. Then press 'Next.'

READY TO INSTALL Now the installer tells you that it is about to write the files to your hard drive and registry for DAZ Studio. Press 'Next' and the installer will write the information.

Watch the install progress bar move across the screen.

During this part, a subinstaller will launch. The subinstaller installs Microsoft's Visual C++ library onto your system. This is necessary software to support DAZ Studio. You can also visit Microsoft's website and do a search for vcredist_x86.exe to install the C++ library manually, if you need to.

Setup has concluded installing DAZ Studio.

This is the last screen and gives you the option to see the readme and launch DAZ Studio.
