<DAZ_Rhyno> Hello everyone, moderation is on now
<DAZ_Rhyno> Welcome newcomers :) let me take a minute to explain how it works
<DAZ_Rhyno> The questions are recorder by our Question Bot.
<DAZ_Rhyno> To ask a question, please click on @QuestionBot on the right column
<DAZ_Rhyno> then type your question as a private message.
<DAZ_Rhyno> We will pick from everyone's questions but won't do a lot of duplicates, so ask unique questions! :) We'll try to get to as many as we can.
<DAZ_Rhyno> so without further ado......
<DAZ_Rhyno> Glad everyone could make it this morning(evening). We would like to welcome ToxicAngel all the way from Finland.
<DAZ_Rhyno> His work is easily recognizable by anyone who sees it, and he'll be sharing more of it, and even some great tutorials with us all today.
<DAZ_Rhyno> We'd also like to say hello to Ravnheart (my personal favorite artist), hopefully she will share some unique insights with us as well :)

<ToxicAngel> * ToxicAngel nods and looks at her
<Ravnheart> * Ravnheart looks around. Uh oh
<DAZ_Rhyno> and Freebies as well
<DAZ_Rhyno> :)
<DAZ_Rhyno> Would you like to start with your tutorial? If anyone misses it we will post it in the chat logs later
<ToxicAngel> that's fine
<DAZ_Rhyno> Great, here we go....

<ToxicAngel> 1 - In the beginning...
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> Okay, this is the original image, i rendered in Vue, and even though it already has a good solid base for the snow, i'd like to do some more into it. Most of you know, that snow covered trees and stuff like that, are really hard to produce in renders, so i'd like to tackle to that issue from the postworking point of view.
<ToxicAngel> This image itself will is a matte painting to use in a movieclip. What i want to do with this one is to add more snow and other odd stuff into it, as well as change the image tonal range a bit, so we could use it for a snow storm sequences as well as a clear, early-morning/day -light scenes. Images in this tutorial are edited with Photoshop CS, but i guess, most of the tools can be found in any other painting programs like Photopaint, Gimp, Paintshop Pro etc.
<ToxicAngel> Okay, shall we begin?!

<ToxicAngel> 2 - Taking the first steps
<ToxicAngel> Right, first things first.
<ToxicAngel> 1. Take a copy of the background layer, create a new layer, and paste the copy there.
<ToxicAngel> 2. Desaturate [ ctrl+shift+u ] the newly created layer, and set its layer mode to normal, and opacity about 30 or so %.
<ToxicAngel> After that successfully done, you should have a significantly darker base to work with. This is good, because were are going to paint some semi-bright snow, it makes the image easier to work with.
<ToxicAngel> Start sketching the snow. Figure how it would have been staggered around the tree brances. If you can't figure it out, get photo references, it'll help :)
<ToxicAngel> - Create a new layer to wich you'll start painting the new sketches (makes it easier if you have a disasterous encounter with something that wasn't supposed to be there :))
<ToxicAngel> - Using Brush -tool, pick out the mid-tone color of snow from somewhere in the image.
<ToxicAngel> - Set brush size to 3-9 pixels, and brush mode to normal.
<ToxicAngel> - Start painting.
<ToxicAngel> The size of the brush greatly depends on the image size and dpi setting of the image. Fortunately this one is for the (sd-quality) movieclips, so i could do it small (1200*960*72 were the original size)
<ToxicAngel> After doodling around about 5 minutes or so i got the picture like this.
<ToxicAngel>

<ToxicAngel> 3 - Adding depth
<ToxicAngel> Okay, now as the initial snow sketching is done, is time to add the depth and detail to the sketch we just painted.
<ToxicAngel> You might want to add additional layers as you work with the hilites and shadows. Additional layers makes it easiers to shift with the colors and hues, if you notice that things weren't exactly right the first time.
<ToxicAngel> Unnecessary remark :I painted the snow on treebrances into single layer. It's easier for me to work with a single layer than 20 of them (and it takes less memory too).
<ToxicAngel> All you really do in this step is to switch between the brush sizes and colors, ranging from bright white to dark blue (almost the darkest blue you'll find in the original picture). I've kept my brush tool settings so, that the brush mode is all the time normal. This gives more control over the overall coloring. It's quite difficult technique to learn, because you are tempted to use brush mode either in screen or multiply, but i've noticed that i won't give the same result. Mainly the shadowing is not that precise, and shadowing is the key while painting the snow.
<ToxicAngel> Okay, so, keep adding the highlites and shadows, until you are satisfied.
<ToxicAngel> This is how the image looked after 20 minutes :
<ToxicAngel>

<ToxicAngel> 4 - Adding details and things
<ToxicAngel> Using the very same techniques as above, i started adding more details to the picture. The dead/frozen tree trunks at the cliff side, more snow around the stone in the left side, etc. All of those are painted in, using the various sizes on brush tool, and picking the colors from around the image for the paint color.
<ToxicAngel> Sometimes it comes handy to clean up the image a bit, so use the eraser tool to give more shape to the things/sketched objects as you move along. I tend to merge layers as i'm happy with them, but this can cause issues, especially when dealing with animations. Sometimes you just need to alter the "finished" work to look somewhat different, and that's why one should always keep the layered version of the image.
<ToxicAngel> Oh, the image after about 40 minutes :
<ToxicAngel>

<ToxicAngel> 5 - Icy puddles and patches
<ToxicAngel> This is where things get more interesting. Using some techniques as above and adding some features into the mix, i painted the icy puddles of water into the picture's lower right corner, where there was just a ground (look at previous pictures)
<ToxicAngel> Let's go through the icy patches step by step.
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> - Change the main painting color to grayish blue, to get the ice's mid color done.
<ToxicAngel> - Use brush tool to paint some rough lines along the perspective to get the first shape of the ice done.
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> - Change the main painting color to darker grayis blue, to get the ice's dark color done.
<ToxicAngel> - Use brush tool to paint over some rough lines.
<ToxicAngel> - Smudge them up using Smudge -tool with various brush sizes. (i went with 5px to 30px)
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> - Change the main painting color to light grayish blue.
<ToxicAngel> - Use brush tool to paint some patches over the existing smudged layer.
<ToxicAngel> - Select Spatter or Oil Pastel brush from brush selection and set it's size accordingly (i used 20 to 40 pixel brushes). You can use Shape dynamic and Scattering settings from the brush tool options to get this done faster. Using those two things, will also give you more realistic results.
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> - Smudge the painted area and change back to brush tool an paint more distinctive hilites into the ice. Use a smaller brush than in the initial sketching.
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> - Once again - smudge thing up again and add some shades the same way as before
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> - Keep adding sharper and shaper hilites and shadows and give shape to the puddle at the same time.
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> - Next one is a neat trick, take a copy of an area above or (exactly below the area) you are working on and paste that into a new layer.
<ToxicAngel> - You can now strech or distort this area a bit to give it a strange and organic look.
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> - Move the tweaked layer over the just painted ice patch and set it screen, and it'll bring out some more details into your icepath.
<ToxicAngel> - You might want to add some more highlites or shadows and puddle is done.
<ToxicAngel> The image after about an hour :
<ToxicAngel>

<ToxicAngel> 6 - Almost there...
<ToxicAngel> Phew, only little tweaks to be done :)
<ToxicAngel> - Using methods described above, i added more finer details like more icicles hanging from the branches and stuff.
<ToxicAngel> - Merged all the ice and snow into the background and duplicated that layer.
<ToxicAngel> - Desaturated the duplicated layer and set its mode to screen.
<ToxicAngel> - Erased parts that i didn't want to boost up and...
<ToxicAngel> - Added a gradient layer to the image, rangin from dark blue to transparent and set its mode to multiply with opacity of about 50%.
<ToxicAngel> And that's about it - 1h 20mins:
<ToxicAngel>

<ToxicAngel> 7 - ...ideas?
<ToxicAngel> Of course you can go and tweak things bit further by doing for instance this :
<ToxicAngel> - Create new layer.
<ToxicAngel> - Take brush -tool and set brush size to about 5px.
<ToxicAngel> - Set paint color to bright white, and start painting dots around the image, to create a snowing effect
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> Not really classy... oh well...
<ToxicAngel> - Duplicate the snow layer and scale the duplicate down about half of its size.
<ToxicAngel> - Keep creating duplicates and move them around the picture so, that they will fill up the screen evenly.
<ToxicAngel> - Merge those into one layer (call it snow layer 2 :))
<ToxicAngel> - Select Filter > Distort > Wave, and use it with approximately these settings
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> Apply this to the both of the snow layers and it'll give your snow some movement. It's still a polkadot snow, but now in somewhat motion...
<ToxicAngel>
<ToxicAngel> Okay the last few things to do
<ToxicAngel> - Filter > Blur > Motion blur.
<ToxicAngel> - Set the angle (i think i used about 32) and give just enough amount that you see the snow starting to blur.
<ToxicAngel> - Do this to the both layers and merge those into one layer.
<ToxicAngel> - Duplicate this layer into new and blur it with Motion blur.
<ToxicAngel> - Set the layer mode for the duplicate to Soft light, and the original snowing layer to screen.
<ToxicAngel> - Use eraser to selectively erase unwanted parts of the snowing effect and - that's it... And it's snowing alright :)
<ToxicAngel>

<ToxicAngel> Like i said at the beginning of this tutorial, this picture was to be used in an animation project, to which the snowing is actually added using particles, and stuff, so this last bit was quite unneccessary. Well - at least you can show the director now : "was this the shot you were after?!"
<ToxicAngel> I hope that this clarified at least some things related to painting/postworking the snow!
<ToxicAngel> I hope that i was somewhat usefull

<DAZ_Rhyno> Thanks Janne. Just a reminder again, click @Questionbot on the right to send ToxicAngel a question.

<ToxicAngel> i only had few hours spare time to do it, so it might be bit confusing :)
<DAZ_Rhyno> The tutorial will be posted in full tomorrow on Artzone.com
<GalaxyStorme> Beautiful work! If I may ask, what tutorials would you suggest for beginners. Ones that are easy to follow. Ones that show different methods and the like.

<ToxicAngel> i honestly don't know - Daz has good tutorials, and many other places as well. Google is the keyword really :)
<DAZ_Rhyno> It's about halfway through the hour... and Gina did promise some Freebies
<DAZ_Rhyno> did you want to tell them about that Gina?
<Ravnheart> One of the best things you can look for is learning how to use layers. They can make a huge difference to your image:)
<Ravnheart> yep yep!:)
<ToxicAngel> layers are good way of fiddling with things, without causing bigger havoc :)

<Ravnheart> We are giving to 10 lucky people a pick of anything in our store:) 5 now and 5 at the end:)
<DAZ_Rhyno> I'll spin the wheel, and the winners for now are:
<ToxicAngel> well - there are a lot of things in photoshop (especially) that you kinda have to find out yourself
<DAZ_Rhyno> ZioKen, Skydancer917, Noelr, Cdlzt, and abbymorgan
<Ravnheart> Grats!!
<ToxicAngel> There are lot of things that i've just accidentaly managed to achive :)

<Dixie Rose> Is it easier to use a tablet for this?
<Ravnheart> * Ravnheart and Ive learned alot by looking over his shoulder :P
<ToxicAngel> Oh yes - i'd suggest that get a tablet - it makes your life much much easier !!

<CyberTiger> One thing I try to do, based on coming from photography, is to use all of the brightness range, but I suspect few monitors can handle that So is it better to expect to lose shadow detail or highlights?
<ToxicAngel> nope - the more you practise the more you learn :)

<Wrapster> That's nice, and thanks for the tutorial, only question I had is.... Why not use Gaussian Blur on the snowflakes as it would present them in roughly the same way only not stretched ???
<ToxicAngel> that's a difficult question - it really depends on the use for the image - i'd cut from the highlite ends ,because those can be easily adjusted
<ToxicAngel> :) wrapster... good point, but not all the snowflakes are the same size and fall with same speed, so i'd like to have different depth on them
<ToxicAngel> and ofcourse - there's the thing of the overall movement of the picture
<DAZ_Rhyno> - - Note, keep sending your questions to @QuestionBot in the right column

<ImmortalImaging> Janne, first, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to do a featured chat :) You're a jack of all trades, doing amazing cover work for some of the worlds best known labels and some of my favorite bands (as does your lovely wife) and a musician as well. Recently you played Brass Week, opening for Timo. What was that like? (C'mon you had to know I'd ask about your music)
<ToxicAngel> using motion blur to bring the "particles" to speed is a good way to fake the eye to see things that aren't actually happening, like in the picture - we might be going into a camera pov turn next... :)
<ToxicAngel> LOL - it was a lot of fun - sweat and tears :)

<abbymorgan> This is really a basics question, so I won't be bothered if it's passed over. Do you have any tips for optimizing render settings to get the best render before going into post work? Particularly, the soft lighting and highlights that you have in all your art? Or is that all postwork?
<ToxicAngel> that is mostly postwork. There are some occations where i've managed to ge the render to look exactly the way i wanted, but most of the time it's postwork.
<ToxicAngel> More to this question - sometimes it's just much faster to paint volumetric stuff in that wait the renderer to finish with it - and only to let you down on the settings :)
<Ravnheart> Also make your render large:) its easier to postwork things when its large and it looks better when you scale it down:)

<DAZ_Rhyno> Why do you think 'postwork' is a bad word in some groups. It seems to be a difficult skill to learn. Do people just not appreciate that?
<ToxicAngel> good point!
<Ravnheart> * Ravnheart hears the mad typing
<Ravnheart> :)
<ToxicAngel> i don't know what is bad about postworking... Everywhere where you look nowadays (like movies) there is a lot of postworking going on. I know that some people don't appreciate it at all, but to be honest, not everything can be done just by rendering it! It seems that the actual painting as a process is more and more surpressed.
<ToxicAngel> i guess it's just like you said - too difficult and time consuming :)
<Ravnheart> well said:)

<Dream_Catcher_Designs> Toxic...your art inspires me so much...I love your style. Can you tell us a little about what inspires you?
<ToxicAngel> well - thank you - hmmm what inspires me - a lot of things, but i guess music is one of the major influences... Sometimes the ideas comes off from everyday stuf :)

<ImmortalImaging> Since SkyNet couldn't be here i'm asking for him. What inspired you to start doing artwork and what part of the creative process do you enjoy the most?
<ToxicAngel> Well to me the kick off really was the Iron Maiden's Powerslave album cover (painted by the-one-and-only Derek Riggs). The part that enjoy the most is the initial feeling after everthing is painted and the people that i'm doing that for says,"wow - that's exactly what i was after!"
<DAZ_Rhyno>
<DAZ_Rhyno> little surprise I found :)

<abbymorgan> Do you have any tips for getting water moving in perspective to look good? Like in River of Skulls where it isn't just that the water is flowing toward the foreground, but that it's also moving over things and downward?
<Ravnheart> Good one!:)
<Ravnheart> * Ravnheart needs to learn this too :)
<ToxicAngel> LOL - that's a good question - i don't even remeber the whole image *gotta take a look at it*
<Ravnheart> hahaha!
<ToxicAngel> Ok - that picture is just a simple trick to fake the eye - i need to write a tutorial on this subject :) Thanx for the idea :)
<ToxicAngel> The basic idea is really simple
<ToxicAngel> You set the fov on the camer to be really narrow, and render the water as terrain (in bryce)- then just blur the water on the areas that are closest to the camera and put splashes and stuff to the more focused area
<ToxicAngel> There it is :)
<Ravnheart> hehehe
<ToxicAngel> man - that is still a great picture after all these years :)
<ToxicAngel> and that's airbrushed :)

<Mr Ink> What gives your images that "smooth airbrush" feeling?
<ToxicAngel> too much royo i guess :) Seriously - i've been trying to imitate the airbrush feeling with photoshop for a while now and it just have taken time to learn. I'm happy if it looks airbrushed.
<DAZ_Rhyno> If you have any questions be sure to get them in quick to @questionbot on the right

<Cazcie> speaking of air brushing, do you use digital medium exclusivly or are you an expert in other mediums as well?
<DAZ_Rhyno> related question:
<3DFineArtist> I just wanted to add to the painting comment several posts ago. I think Toxic was mentioning how it takes longer than 3D which is true, and traditional painting is becoming a lost art form which in alot of peoples cases true, since they are finding out that cg art is much easier and less messy once they understand how it's done. I studied fine art and painted murals professionally over 12 years, and have been doing 3D for 4 years, and still paint canvas and murals. Question to Toxic angel is, do you still paint when you have the time? Or do you just stick to the CG Pallette?
<ToxicAngel> as of now i only use digital medium, because it's faster. I've been doing some pencil works earlier, and few "try-this-out" things with Oils, but that's about it. I always try to sketch things up first with pencils if possible !
<ToxicAngel> i guess i accidentaly answered to that question from 3dFineArtist :)
<Ravnheart> you should see all the skectch pads around here:) I love just looking thorugh them:)
<ToxicAngel> I still love to sketch things up with pencils - all the time.
<DAZ_Rhyno> yeah, they were similar, so I threw them both in
<3DFineArtist> sounds good and very inspiring to me toxic angel. gives me hope to continue fine art as well once in a while.

<JWideman> I got in late, so sorry if this was already asked. Do you try to make each image tell a story, or is it just an idea? And if it's a story, do you think other people get it?
<ToxicAngel> I hope that you keep on doing fine arts convetional ways - i've always admired people that can really paint - not just paint with computers.
<ToxicAngel> Jwideman - that's a good one
<ToxicAngel> If i work with custom orders - i'd like my images to tell the story what the customer wants to say. On my own art - i've never given it that much a thought. I just love fooling around with ideas and subjects, but i never really tried to tell a story.
<ToxicAngel> I'm happy if somebody picks one up from my image tho :)

<DuskDawn> do you use Poser or DAZ studio in your work and if so how much of it ends up in your finished images?
<ToxicAngel> I prefer to use Poser over Daz studio, but only for setting the characters up. Rendering can be done in some other sofwares, like bryce or vue. Most of my pictures are heavily postworked, so not a whole lot of the original scene will actually stay there. The latest cover illustration was a really good example
<ToxicAngel> I've never been a good rendered, mainly because i don't have all that patience that it needs - i just need the rough thing from which i can start doing my stuff :)
<ToxicAngel> renderer - i meant - bad day for typing :)
<DAZ_Rhyno> OK, well it's past the top of the hour and still going strong. I think that it's time to give out some more freebies, and then maybe turn off moderation and let everyone mix and mingle, what do you think?
<Ravnheart> sure thing!:)
<ToxicAngel> sure thing :)

<Ravnheart> Drum roll please!
<ToxicAngel> * ToxicAngel no drumrolls - had enough of them already :)
<Ravnheart> BTW Janne is also a fantastic drummer!
