<3D Universe> I'm going to show you how to model a simple cartoon Lioness head using subdivision. This is not a tutorial as such, but rather a peek at how I do it...

<3D Universe> Step 1: I start with a simple cube 5 divisions wide, 3 divisions tall and 2 divisions deep. Almost any shape can actually be started with the humble cube. I am specific on the number of divisions to make things like eyes and ears easy to add later on.
<3D Universe> 
<3D Universe> Step 2: I now start sizing various parts of the cube to created the general shape of my final head. I'm wanting the top of the head to be small with a big jaw.
<3D Universe> 
<3D Universe> Step 3: I now do a whole lot of general shaping by dragging various vertexes around. This shapes the brows, big cheeks and gets polygons in the right place for the eyesockets.
<3D Universe> 
<3D Universe> Lets have a look at the model so far in subdivision (subdivision multiplies up the mesh and rounds out shapes).
<3D Universe> 
<3D Universe> Step 04: I now create the muzzle by selecting polygons on the front of the head and extruding the out. I also do a bit of shaping to get the muzzle shape nice and round. You may notice that I have also got a polygon in the right place for the nose, and have created the general jaw shape.

<3D Universe> Step 05: By selecting polygons on the bottom of the head and extruding them down and then extruding them forward, I create a bottom jaw and chin (shown in subdivision view as it's easier to see the shape).
<3D Universe> 
<3D Universe> I now create the eye sockets by extruding the two eye polygons into the head.
<3D Universe> 
<3D Universe> Step 07: Selecting the resulting edge of the eye sockets, I extrude these eight polygons into the middle of the eye socket. This creates a more detailed socket shape.
<3D Universe> 
<3D Universe> Step 08: I now select the middle polygon in each eye socket, set it's material color to my eye color (in this case black), and extrude them out of the socket, resulting in a nice little beady eye (shown in subdivision view).

<3D Universe> (hey - that looks a bit like spuggles!)
<3D Universe> Step 09: Onto the Nose... I extrude the center polygon into the head a little bit, set it's material to my nose color, and the extrude it back out of the head to create my basic nose shape.
<3D Universe> 
<3D Universe> Step 10: By extruding the nose again and shaping it a bit by sizing the resulting polygon a bit, I create a nice round button nose (shown in subdivision view).
<3D Universe> 
<3D Universe> Step 11: Onto the ears... I select the ear polygon on each side of the head and extrude it a little, and then extrude it again, sizing the resulting polygon slightly to create the basic ear shape.

<3D Universe> Step 12: I now select the front two polygons in each ear, and extrude them into the head slightly and resize them to shape the inner ear. I the set the color of the resulting polygons to my ear material, and extrude the again. They are all adjusted to make a nice inner ear shape.

<3D Universe> ...and let's look at it in subdivision view. Viola! We have our basic Lioness head!

<3D Universe> With the basics done, it's now a matter of adding detail - here's an idea of the sort of detail that can be added while maintaining the toon look.

<3D Universe> To help you get to grips on this technique of model creation, we have an OBJ file available that contains this model at each of the steps (1-12). Each step is included as a seperate object.

<Ikyoto> What artists inspired you when you were younger?
<3D Universe> Disney was probably my biggest inspiration. I loved the depth and color of the worlds they created.
<3D Universe> I have always loved imaginary creatures, and fondly remember my mom reading be "The Faraway Tree" and other books...
<MysticBlueRaven> What do you love most about making toon for poser? What program do you use and why? What advise would you give to a begainer, just starting out?
<3D Universe> What I love most is that there are absolutely no limits. My characters don't have to conform to any particular style. They don't have to look real, only believable.
<3D Universe> I use a great variety of programs to creat my characters... the main ones are: LightWave, Photoshop, Deep UV, UV Layout and Poser (duh!) :-)
<3D Universe> Advice I'd give - don't try to copy someone else... find what you are passionate about and follow that. Although you can learn from people who have been successful, be yourself rather than a copy

<warmblood> How much planning do you do on paper before you begin a figure?
<pokeydots> On the tutorial when you added the whiskers and teeth, are they seperate from the original mesh?

<3D Universe> How much planning... that all depends on what I'm creating. A lot of the time I have absolutely no idea what I going to make :-). Items like AikoToon take more planning, though I normally "plan" in a modeler rather than on paper...
<3D Universe> Thw whispers and teeth are seperate (the whiskers are actually just long 4-sided cyclinders). They are positioned to intersect with the head mesh
<3D Universe> *lol* I'm not planning on selling a toon lion anytime soon, although you never know - the bug might bite me :-)
<CristiJaberJaws> Are you planning anything new for the heavies?
<3D Universe> No, I think the Heavies series has run it's course. Although the people who bought those products were really passionate about them, the amount of sales unfortunately couldn't really justify the work that went into them...
<chaser> What's next for 3D Universe after HiroToon?
<3D Universe> We are planning a few support products for AikoToon and HiroToon, and then we'll just see what happens. We will probably continue working on our Toon Town project.
<thebelovedalia> what do you consider the hardest part of being a 3d artist?
<3D Universe> Definitely having enough time to complete everything. Most of the time I have 3 or 4 other ideas floating around in my head - it's hard to prioritize the ideas and focus on just one of them :-)
<3D Universe> I would love to have a few clones of myself ;-)
<warmblood> What proportion of your work is creating models for Daz community, vs custom work
<3D Universe> That varies, for a while (almost a year) I was spending almost half my time creating products for a non-poser client. Right now, I spend about 15% of my time on non Daz/Poser items.
<3D Universe> The poser products are the base of my business at this stage and are my "bread and butter" :-)
<aqua1955> how does it feel to you, that people use your work creating in their on way and shapes and does it give you anything extra creating something new, when you see what they made out of it

<3D Universe> I am always amazed when I see creative use of my products. When I creat them, I normally have a very narrow vision of what people could do with them, and I love it when that vision is blown away by someones creativity.

<3D Universe> Being stuck in South Africa is a bit of an issue for me to get into other 3D related industries. The 3D industry is almost non-existant here, so there aren't many opportunities.
<3D Universe> I would probably have to relocate to get into the 3D film industry, and I kinda like it here :-)

<3D Universe> I believe that through 3D, we're redefining 2D...
<3D Universe> Let me explain what I mean... most 3D film companies are investing a lot of time into making their films look hand drawn (2D). I believe that 2D will never truly die, but will rather be replaced with new ways of creating it.
<yram> Sorry to hear about lack of sales for heavies... they are great toon characters! Which of your models have been more successful? By the way... glad to hear you are working on Toon Town! I will, of course, be adding much more of your models to my collection... as funds permit me.
<3D Universe> On the toon side, most of my figures have more than paid their way. I'm hoping that AikoToon and HiroToon will be the most popular so far though ;-)
<Mkoobas> What is your opinion, can you create real art with poser? there has been a long talk of this issue at the cg forums, is Poser your main program you use ? And prior when rendering?
<3D Universe> My opinion is yes, you can create true art using Poser or Daz Studio or whatever. The software and products that you use are merely tools in the hand of an artist (like a paintbrush).
<3D Universe> Using the same tools, some people will throw together a mess with no creativity and call it art...
<3D Universe> Others will create something truly unique and beautiful... in my opinion - thats real art.
