Special Guest: Moyra Logan

<Moyra> Thanks for coming to vist with me...I have a surprise for you to thank you for coming....It will be with you in the next week or so...petite hold up
<Moyra> Its a Merchant Resource of textures based on my own rather exotic decorativs arts collection.
<matrix07> how long have you been doing this?
<Moyra> I have been doing art my whole life - but texturing since 1999, or 8 years.
<rmash1948> Thank you for coming to chat with us, Moyra. What got you started into the wild, wonderful, and hair-tearing-out world of digital art?
<Moyra> Digital art - hmmm....I started teaching myself in 1992, in an attempt to port my paintings into the digital medium....been AGES, as this artform goes
<Moyra> And IN digital art, I am entirely self taught - there were no "resources" or tutoruials in those days
<Bryceheart-- Bryce Evangelist> Hi Moyra! Would you say that your professional training with respect to art has helped or hindered your newfound artistic expression with the ever-evolving age of digital creativity?
<Moyra> My training has helped immensely - mostly because my training developed the most important thing - an "eye"
<Moyra> Essentially, that is the root of all art - a translation of vision, a noticing of every tiny detail, and an attempt to translate that into something shared
<matrix07> do you have any advice for others who might want to get started in texturing themselves?
<DAZ_Rhyno> to ask Morya a question, send your question to QuestionBot as a private message by clicking "@QuestionBot" on the right hand side.
<DAZ_melissamae> We're having some technical issues..
<Moyra> Sorry about the lag...but yes, I have advice for new texture artists
<Moyra> And that advice is: Never, ever say "that's good enough"
<Moyra> Keep up with the latest advancements/techniques - this medium and what you can DO develops super fast!
<Moyra> Use everything the software and digital techniques let you - displacements, bumps, specularity...shaders - everything!
<Moyra> Its exciting, because as this filed develops, so fo the immense possibilities
<Arien> Thank you for being here today Moyra, I've been a fan since your Web Jewels website, your work has been an inspiration. I wanted to ask, with the abundance of merchant resources and ready made bases for texturing, where do you see the future of texturing for the Poser market going?
<Moyra> Thanks for remembering my old incarnation ;->
<Moyra> I am not sure how bases and merchant resources would be anything but a huge blessing to the Poser market.
<Moyra> You still have to infuse them with your own spirit, so to speak.
<Moyra> And the stars are always the limit as far as any medium of expression goes
<BarbarianHamster> Moyra, in your opinion, what would you consider the top three characteristic that a person should develop in order to be successful in this field?
<Moyra> Golly - OK, I think they are actually the same as would make you successful in ANY field
<Moyra> Extreme dedication, putting your work in the public eye and never letting yourself slip into a sense of satisfaction with your achievements - you HAVE to keep pushing your own envelope and the envelope of your craft
<Kuanbyr> What programs other than Photoshop do you use?
<Moyra> I a a HUGE fab of Painter - been using it since way back when, the first version for the PC ('94 I think)
<Moyra> Fan, not fab, heh
<kulay> Which programs do you use for texturing
<DAZ_melissamae> More technical difficulties...just one minute everyone!
<FrederickRM> Do you ever make use of Displacement or bump maps in your work or just rely on texture maps?
<Moyra> Nowadays, I pretty much ALWAYS use both displacement and bump maps - and specularity maps, where applicable. I have come to consider these map pretty essential and important to all texture work
<Bryceheart-- Bryce Evangelist> One of the problems that many digital artists discover only when its too late, is that low quality textures can make a mess of things when the finished work has been enlarged. Do you have any intention on offering high-res textures for programs like Bryce?
<Moyra> Hello Bryceheart! You are right re Bryce and the need for higher res textures. I already make rather high res textures, pushing the limits of Poser (most of my customers are Poser users, I believe), but if/when I will make Bryce specific textures, I will certainly make them way larger. Its a bit of a quandarym though, because Poser users cannot make use of such high res textures
<kulay> What inspires you?
<Moyra> Heh - the most asked question to creatived everywhere, and a very good one, kulay!
<Moyra> Truth is, there is NOTHING that does not inspire me, I have a very visceral and visual relationship with the world around me. Everything from a glorious medieval altarpiece to a piece of chewing gum stuck on a dirty sidewalk can be inspiring...
<MasterWolf> what tools are in your tool box, what software do you use most?
<Moyra> Wow, my toolbox is full of goodies, mostly, though, I am a Photoshop and Painter artist. Those apps really have all the magic there is. I flirt with other programs, but those are my creative tools. Of course, Daz Studio and Poser, a little Bryce, but mostly I am a 2d artist, a painter once who hasn't painted in 5 years, alas!
<The_Enforcer> Between Adobe Photoshop and Corel's Paintshop, which one would you suggest to someone starting out?
<Moyra> I really don;t know PaintShop Pro at all, so I can't judge it. I cut my pixel teeth way back when on Photoshop, reading the manual (remember this was before tutorials) and fi8ghting every inch of the way. Loved the proces, and in the end, I think I would always reccomend to start with the state of the industry, very best thing you can afford.
<AlmightyQUEST> what other artists have influenced your work, both your texture work and your own personal artwork?
<Moyra> Everyone and everything influences my art - I think this is true for most artists, because we rely on our "eye" to create. I can't name any specifics, I think that I admire bits and pieces of everything I see, of everyone's work. Its a glorious sharing to see where others go with their own vision. So no particular influence, ALL influences
<rmash1948> I seem to be full of questions today. *chuckles* What about use users of DAZ|Studio? Will you be making high-quality/high-res textures for us?
<Moyra> Sorry about the revolving door I seem to be stuck in...back again
<Moyra> As to Daz Studio, high res/high quality textures, oh my!
<Moyra> I have been making Daz Studio specific settings since April of 2006 - so I am sure many Studio users have at least one or two stray pixels of mine in their content folders, being as one is rather prolific
<Kuanbyr> Do you like to use scans or Photos for your textures, or prefer to paint complete original?
<Moyra> There si no one or the other answer I can give - I use everything, scans, photos and fron scratch painted things. It depends on the scope of the project, the time I have to work on it and, hehehe, my mood
<Kuanbyr> What program do you find the best to make UV's for the meshes that you texture?
<Moyra> I use UVMapper Pro. Probably not the state of the art, but for my purposes, good. I don't often uvmap these days, I am blessed to work on maps created by some fabulous whizes at uvmapping...
<rmash1948> The entire merchant resource package(s): what if all you want to do is make pretty things for yourself and not for sale on the market? Are they that useful for something like that?
<Moyra> I amke plenty of pretties for my own texture use, but I really enjoy creating at that level. Its almost hypnotically relaxing to deal with basic pattern and texture at that level. And I love to make them for others, and see them used.
<Moyra> Sorry about the dreadful typoing...
<DAZ_amandible> Here is the link to Moyra's merchant resourse: http://artzone.daz3d.com/chat_images/Moyras_Exotics.zip
<Moyra> That's your prezzie for coming to visit with me today - its a merchant resource package that is based on objects and furniture from my own collection.
<Moyra> Enjoy!
<Nester751> Thank you for taking time to share a chat with us. When you are creating a texture, how large an image do you generally start with?
<Moyra> I start with HUGE - no, not really, but I do tend to work as big as Poser will handle. It depends on the size of the object in the program - evidently a room will be a far bigger map than a candelabra, and a dress needs to be far higher res than a pair of shoes...
<DAZ_melissamae> Thank you everyone for your patience with the technical issues (especially Moyra)! We want to say thanks to Moyra for chatting with us today!
