<DAZ_mattw> Okay.
<DAZ_mattw> Welcome, everyone, to our featured chat.
<DAZ_mattw> Our guest today is Mark Bremmer. He is a certified Carrara pro. (not that I know who certifies that, but it's true!)
<MarkBremmerBug> Well I should be certified, but that's another topic.
<DAZ_mattw> He's produced a lot of art professionally, and also is frequently featured as a guest lecturer/teacher at colleges and art schools around the country
<DAZ_mattw> We're glad to have him
<DAZ_mattw> If you have a question to ask him, click 'QuestionBot' on the right hand side and send your question to the QuestionBot as a private message, to queue it up for the moderators
<DAZ_mattw> without further ado, welcome, Mark, and let's get the show on the road!
<DAZ_mattw> To start off today, we've got a tutorial from Mark.
<MarkBremmerBug> Howdy, I put together a quick
<MarkBremmerBug> tutorial that covers some pesky shader problems
<MarkBremmerBug> you might encounter in carrara sometimes. Especially with "stock" models
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 01) Let's start by creating a new scene with a bust of Bach that is pre-loaded in the Carrara object browser. This is a vertex mesh object. Simply drag and drop it into your scene.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 02) From the Edit pull-down menu, choose Create New Master Shader. Then select your new shader in the shader portion of the Properties Tray and rename it to something meaningful - like Old Marble. We'll be ignoring all of the shaders that imported with the Big Hair Bach.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 03) Now the fun begins. :-) We'll convert the plain shader into a complex shader. Specifically, a Multi Channel Mixer. This gives you two slots for Multi Channel shaders plus a way to blend them together.
<DAZ_Biggie> To ask a question for Mark, please message QuestionBot by clicking on QuestionBot on the right hand side, and send your question as a private message. It will be queued for the moderators
<MarkBremmerBug> By the way, you can download this stuff after the chat in case we go too fastt.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 04) Go to your Shader Browser and open up the stock Rocks and Stone folder and then drag the Cream Marble shader to the first Multi Channel slot in our new shader tree.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 05) Now we're going to duplicate the Shader into the other Multi Channel slot by Option Click dragging (Mac) or Alt Click dragging (PC) Fast and easy. You can also do that by copying and pasting the shader channel if you prefer.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 06) At this point, we choose the blender for the two channels. >From the pull-down menu select Natural Functions -> Elevation. We won't adjust any settings yet.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 07) Now we apply the new shader to all the parts of the J.S. Bach model. Close the disclosure triangle for the model in the Property Tray and select the whole model. Next, choose the new shader we've built and select Apply to Children. If you don't do the Apply to Children, the dialog makes it look like the shader should be on all the parts of Bach but in fact, the old shaders will still be there.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 08) Next we edit the shader. Choose Edit two buttons up from the Apply to Children button but make sure to select Edit the Master when the dialog pops up.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 09) Bach's face is the first victim of our shading tutorial. In the Preview window, click on the words Sphere Preview and scroll down to Facet 2 which is the face.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 10) Adjust your settings to the ones shown. Hey wait a minute, something is obviously very, very wrong in the preview. That's because the vertex mesh of the face has a different UV space or "instructions" about what the top of the object really is compared to how it's sitting in our Assembly Room. Let's fix that.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 11) From the axis options, choose "Y". Now things are starting to look normal.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 12) When we go back to the Assembly room and do a quick render, the head and hair looks pretty good but what's up with the rest of the statue? Imported models don't always play nice. :-( Actually it's acting perfect normal based upon our intitial shader choices. However, now we need to start customizing the main shader so it works better with the various parts.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 13) Click on the disclosure triangle for the model so you can see all of the parts. Then either select Facets 9 or click directly on the main part of Bach's jacket in the Assembly Room window. Choose the Edit button for the shader shown at the top of the properties tray. **IMPORTANT** Choose Create New Master when the dialog pops up this time.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 14) Now let the tweaking and experimenting begin. The UV instructions for pre-made models can be different for each part - and that's the case here. To make the shader work on the jacket I've had to make several changes to the blender branch of the shader tree (shown in the screen capture). The totally cool part is that the marble veins will remain consitent no matter what we do to the blender instructions. That means that there will be visual continuity no matter what we do.
<MarkBremmerBug>
<MarkBremmerBug> 15) A quick hop back into the Assembly Room let's do an Area Render and check our progress. Now all that left is modifying any shaders on model parts to complete the illusion of aging.
<MarkBremmerBug> Tutorial Conclusion) Do you want to change how the dirty parts "drip" down the model. Simply change the Seed number in the blender/elevation shader to redistribute the drips. Beyond this you can also adjust the shininess of the "dirty" marble multi channel shader so it's less reflective and dull - just like the real stuff. Pretty cool, huh?
<MarkBremmerBug> Shading in 15 easy steps, right?
<BAR-CODE> SO Why Carrara ? and not something else ?
<MarkBremmerBug> Well, I kind of slipped into Carrara.
<MarkBremmerBug> I'd actually been airbrushing and staying up very late at night
<MarkBremmerBug> and thought, "man there's got to be a better way"
<MarkBremmerBug> So I investigated inexpensive 3d packages
<MarkBremmerBug> There was Ray Dream Studio
<MarkBremmerBug> However, the software has matured very nicely and while
<MarkBremmerBug> I work with a multitude of 3d packages now, Carrara is at the center of the wheel
<forrestwalter> Have you done any network rendering with Carrara?
<MarkBremmerBug> Oh yea. That's something that I love about Carrara
<MarkBremmerBug> I spread quite a few projects over the network
<MarkBremmerBug> It saves me a ton of time. The problem? I keep trying to do more with faster render capabilities
<MarkBremmerBug> So I always max out the render capability of any system.
<bernards> What do you like best about Carrara?
<MarkBremmerBug> Hmmmmm, that's a tough one.
<MarkBremmerBug> I guess I really like the whole package because it's such a great
<MarkBremmerBug> generalist type of 3d application.
<MarkBremmerBug> Actually, one of the things
<MarkBremmerBug> that I like the best is cost of the plug-ins. Man, that just rocks.
<MarkBremmerBug> I can get some very high end effects on the cheap
<MarkBremmerBug> as compared to some of the Big Name applications.
<MarkBremmerBug> In doing a lot of video post, I've
<MarkBremmerBug> realized that many special effects are actually
<MarkBremmerBug> carried out by the video compositing
<MarkBremmerBug> softwares, not the 3d packages.
<forrestwalter> Have you tried Blender? Wings3D?
<MarkBremmerBug> I'm SUCH an art mercenary.
<MarkBremmerBug> I use whatever gets the job done the fastes
<MarkBremmerBug> so I can move onto the next part
<MarkBremmerBug> of the project.
<MarkBremmerBug> I do use Blender, Vue 5 Infinity, Hexagon, Amapi, a little Bryce now and then
<MarkBremmerBug> Poser. Just not the really expensive apps.
<MarkBremmerBug> For my clients, the Name applications just aren't required.
<MarkBremmerBug> I run a mac shop so I haven't tried Wings.
<maartenvs> Mark do you need to do any postwork on your images?
<MarkBremmerBug> Sometimes. It really depends on
<MarkBremmerBug> time, budget, desired effects etc.
<MarkBremmerBug> While I can create some special effects within Carrrara,
<MarkBremmerBug> sometimes it's simply faster to run a batch Photoshop filter on
<MarkBremmerBug> sequenced images or use some particle effects
<MarkBremmerBug> software in post.
<MarkBremmerBug> I'm not a purest when it comes to getting
<MarkBremmerBug> the job done. It's really about whatever makes the image or animation
<MarkBremmerBug> a success. (see the art mercenary comment :-)
<Kuanbyr> What do you think is the best plug-in for a rookie user to play with?
<MarkBremmerBug> Can I say all of them? :D
<MarkBremmerBug> For me the most useful is DCG's Enhance:C
<MarkBremmerBug> However, to use the plug successfully, you have to
<MarkBremmerBug> have a pretty thorough knowledge of how to use the shader tree
<MarkBremmerBug> in Carrara.
<MarkBremmerBug> So to answer your question directly. Probably, DCG's Shader Op's
<MarkBremmerBug> But now that I said that, Shoestring shaders is pretty cool too.
<Claywoman> How do you like Hexagon in comparison to Cararra?
<MarkBremmerBug> I really enjoy working with hexagon.
<MarkBremmerBug> For me at least, it's like modeling on steroids.
<MarkBremmerBug> Adding to that, it exports to Carrara format while maintaining
<MarkBremmerBug> the smoothing function on low res polys
<MarkBremmerBug> so I can continue to edit the low res mesh in Carrrara until it's
<MarkBremmerBug> just right.
<Kuanbyr> I've been having troubles getting much done in Carrara, do you have a number of tutorials or know where to find good ones?
<MarkBremmerBug> Well, at the risk of shameless self promotion. Yes, I made some. :)
<MarkBremmerBug> Here's the frustrating part of tutorials
<MarkBremmerBug> For the most part, they're written
<MarkBremmerBug> for complete beginners.
<MarkBremmerBug> So, when you advance a little beyond the beginner stage,
<MarkBremmerBug> there is nothing to guide the growth.
<MarkBremmerBug> Compound that with the fact that super advanced
<MarkBremmerBug> tutorials are sometimes only good for one effect.
<MarkBremmerBug> In the ones I put together I added some "mid level" types of info
<MarkBremmerBug> But holy cow, it would be easy to do 8 hours
<MarkBremmerBug> on Shaders development alone.
<MarkBremmerBug> And then there's that part about lighting a scene to make shaders
<MarkBremmerBug> look good. Jack Whitney also has a tutorial series out and his is
<MarkBremmerBug> very good to. And of course there is the Carrara 5 handbook.
<MarkBremmerBug> All of those are good stuff, but it really depends on the
<MarkBremmerBug> kind of learner you are. Are books better?
<MarkBremmerBug> Would you rather watch somebody do it?
<MarkBremmerBug> Personally, I've got see it action which is why
<MarkBremmerBug> I took my personal tutorials that direction.
<LordHazard> Would you recommend Carrara to a total newbie, or is there a particular piece of "starter" software you think would be better to start with?
<MarkBremmerBug> Carrara is great for noobs and pros.
<MarkBremmerBug> Carrar has made it interface pretty friendly as compared to
<MarkBremmerBug> some other software that I've had a chance to demo
<MarkBremmerBug> If you've got good pro knowldege from other 3D apps, you
<MarkBremmerBug> can easily apply it to Carrara.
<MarkBremmerBug> But here's the kicker. 3D is it's own weird animal.
<MarkBremmerBug> I came from illustrating and retouching in 2D.
<MarkBremmerBug> So, the whole 3D experience was completely foreign to me.
<MarkBremmerBug> "What, I have to make everything" I realized.
<MarkBremmerBug> Somethiing that really helped me though was
<MarkBremmerBug> seeing, on the job, how photographers
<MarkBremmerBug> light stuff in their studios. I'm convinced that good lighting
<MarkBremmerBug> is 80% of a rendering a good scene.
<BAR-CODE> Do you know DAZ Studio ..if so do you think they should intergrate the two into One Super program
<MarkBremmerBug> Hmmmmmm, kind of makes you go, "hmmmmm"
<MarkBremmerBug> Maybe. My exprerience with some other softwares is that
<MarkBremmerBug> the more mega they become, the more issues there are that
<MarkBremmerBug> can slow work down. I do like programs playing well together
<MarkBremmerBug> But that means learning multiple interfaces, programs, quirks
<MarkBremmerBug> and such. For my work I have to be fluent in about 30 software
<MarkBremmerBug> titles to pull off the visual trickery I enjoy. Keeping up on them
<MarkBremmerBug> is a little daunting sometimes.
<MarkBremmerBug> Carrara has come a long ways in terms of working with animatied
<MarkBremmerBug> figures, boning them and playing with the rig. There does seem to
<MarkBremmerBug> be a blurring of function that may cause a merge to happen.
<anasazi25> I guess I've heard that quite a few people import their Poser scenes into Carrara for final rendering. How hard a process is that and are there some adjustments (lighting, e.g.) one must make after importing?
<MarkBremmerBug> Getting Poser scenes into Carrara is pretty painless.
<MarkBremmerBug> Personally, I don't do any lighting in Poser when I use that program
<MarkBremmerBug> and set the lights in Carrara instead. You can get some greatt
<MarkBremmerBug> results within Poser but I find it takes more time
<MarkBremmerBug> and since the meter is usually running for me, I do it all in Carrara
<MarkBremmerBug> Yes, ther is special lighting to do that shows off your textures
<MarkBremmerBug> better and creates the mood for your scene. But that's going to
<MarkBremmerBug> be unique to each scene so I can't really give you "Here's
<MarkBremmerBug> what you do" kind of answer :-/
<KindredSpirit> Have you any tricks for remembering techniques for different programs? I I use bryce for awhile, I forget Poser and in turn Carrara
<MarkBremmerBug> Yes, it's called: Use them. :D
<MarkBremmerBug> Just like a foreign language or playing the piano,
<MarkBremmerBug> the more you do it, the more fluent you'll be.
<MarkBremmerBug> Actually, I get the most of playing with the softwares - personal
<MarkBremmerBug> projects, not the business projects.
<MarkBremmerBug> It keeps me into the software. Also something that is very
<MarkBremmerBug> important to me for conitnued learning
<MarkBremmerBug> is trying to work out answers to questions
<MarkBremmerBug> I see posted in the forums. Man, just when you think
<MarkBremmerBug> that you've got something figured out, someone
<MarkBremmerBug> poses a question that makes you think, "I have no idea". Fiinding
<MarkBremmerBug> the answer, or work-around, keeps you fresh!
<Pod Pilot> Hi, Mark. Thanks for talking with us. I was impressed by your sailing ship image. How did you get the drape of the sails? Are they formula objects?
<The Crow>
<MarkBremmerBug> That was one of those "personal" images I was talkign about
<MarkBremmerBug> The sails are simple meshes that are easily modifiable.
<MarkBremmerBug> I was very interested in working with Carrara's
<MarkBremmerBug> new capability to do translucency. Sails seemeed like the perfect
<MarkBremmerBug> test - linen with a backlight
<MarkBremmerBug> The sail mesh is super simply to do. But the texture maps is whan really
<MarkBremmerBug> creates the billowing effect - seeing the lines deform along the mesh.
<MarkBremmerBug> For that example, for the translscency, I simply copied the
<MarkBremmerBug> sail texture into the transluscency channel. Dialed
<MarkBremmerBug> down the map and ther you have it.
<MarkBremmerBug> Truely, texutres and lighting make up most of 3D. Sure modelin
<MarkBremmerBug> is important, but you help people skip over some mediocre
<MarkBremmerBug> modeling with lighting and textures.
<DAZ_mattw> Ladies and Gentlemen, the time has come for our official chat to wind down.
<DAZ_mattw> But, before we go, Mark has graciously offered some tutorials free for some lucky winners

<Nester751> Alisa Uh-Lisa, you can try to copy paste the file into a text file.
<Claywoman> Congratulations to the winners!
<Haruchai> Fascinating stuff - thanks.
<RingoM> Hi, Mark.
<Digimon> which cararar modeling tool do you porefer?
<turan> With 20 years in the business, how do you handle copyright? i.e. how do you know you’re not drawing something you saw somewhere?
<Nester751> Also, congratulations to the winners too!
<ghost_13> alisa I don't know how to pull up a completed chat either
<Claywoman> The chat was very interesting
<Digimon> Spline? Vertex?
<RingoM> Will DAZ carry your tutorials, Mark?
<maartenvs> Uh-Lisa, there will be a transcript in a couple of days on the Feature chat page
<Ducksy> Sorry, i missed the winners by pressing Clear chat by accident, anyone repeat them pls?
<MarkBremmerBug> I believe DAZ is working with VTC on a relationship right now.
<Claywoman> I want to know if you have any advice on how to start getting into production type projects Mark
<ghost_13> thanks maartenvs
<Terrell> We should be able to grab todays tut later in the week right?
<RingoM> cool.
<Alisa Uh-Lisa> Thanks, all - I couldn't get it to copy :-/ Was hoping to save it now, and not have to wait :-)
<maartenvs> Ducksy I only know Maars-girl and Cazcie
<maartenvs> do not know the third
<Terrell> Cris won
<Alowyn> ChrisPalomino was one...
<DragonOfDestiny> quit
<maartenvs> third is Cris Palomino
<ghost_13> chris palomino was the 3rd
<Alisa Uh-Lisa> The winners were Cris Palomino, Cazcie, & maars_girl
<Terrell> Ducksy safe to say it wasn't me lol
<Ducksy> thanks maartenvs and others ;)
<MarkBremmerBug> Copyrights is an important subject. I can't do it just in chat in the time I have left
<APDI> great chat ..thank you!
<timvtc1> Hi Mark, thanks for the great chat (Tim at VTC)
<turan> no problem - another time :-)
<tiggersprings> Very interesting chat.
<Loopydee1> excellent chat. thank you
<MarkBremmerBug> Hi Tim!
<CitizenM> Thanks Mark! Very informative and worthwhile!
<SqueekyWoo> Thanks Mark - but the time goes so quickly !
<Nester751> Hi tiggersprings!
<Nester751> Very beautiful artwork, Mark!
<JZArtist3D> Cool Chat! Thanks Mark & AZ. More interested in Carrara now.............. C-ya
<MarkBremmerBug> Thanks for the kind words everyone!
<maartenvs> I love the image with the train
<Cris Palomino> some wonderful work, mark...i have enjoyed looking at it
<LeChatDesigns> Thanks so much for sharing with us!
<maartenvs> just how do you get that out of focus effect Mark
<Claywoman> *crying* don't go
<amsolano> Now that I heard an opinion I have been swayed to give Carrara a shot...
<MarkBremmerBug> Which focus effect?
<amsolano> lol
<MarkBremmerBug> You'll like Carrara amsolano!
<maartenvs> like the image with the shopping card which is in focus but the third car is blurred (out of focus)
<Alisa Uh-Lisa> anyone else know how to save a chat?
<amsolano> thanx...
<Claywoman> I used to know but forgot sorry
<Alisa Uh-Lisa> or where to find help
<MarkBremmerBug> That's actually done within Carrara using it's ray-traced DOF capability
<maartenvs> Alisa, there will be a transcipt of the chat in a couple of days on the same page that you used to enter the Features Chat
<maartenvs> Thanks Mark, I will need to find out how that works
<Haruchai> Very good point about tutorials Mark. It seems to go from beginner to asking very specific questions in forums with not a lot in between
<Terrell> Took me 45 minutes to crash Carrara lol
<Terrell> That is a record heee heee
<Alisa Uh-Lisa> Thanks, Maartenevs - unfortunately, it often takes a Long time for them to put up the transcript. Latest one there now is from Oct 19th
<Claywoman> Mark do you have any suggestions for those who are interested in working on production type projects?
<DAZ_Noltar> Alisa, currently the only way to save it yourself is (if you use IE) to highlight it all and copy it then paste it into a text editor of some sort. As Maarten mentioned there should be a transcript available in the future if you happen to miss some of it.
<maartenvs> Yes I know Alisa, but it will be put up someday
<MarkBremmerBug> Suggestions for...?
<DAZ_Noltar> I'm also checking into getting the more recent chat transcripts added to the archive. :)
<maartenvs> heya Noltar
<Claywoman> Suggestions on how to get started working with teams who are doiing production type collaborations
<maartenvs> okay all it is time for me to go to bed, until the next time we meet
<Nester751> Good night everybody! Thanks again for the chat, Mark!
<Ducksy> seeya maartenvs ;)

<amsolano> CUL8R maartenvs
<MarkBremmerBug> is a great way to meet the folks you want to work with.
<Alisa Uh-Lisa> Oh, well, I guess I have to wait :-( using foxfire and it won't copy from the window. Thanks all...and thanks so much, Mark!
<Ducksy> And thanks again Mark, that has reawakened my interst in C5
<Claywoman> are there cg associations?
<MarkBremmerBug> See 'ya Alisa
<timvtc1> Hey mark, maybe next time we can provide a URL for the tuorial? After Daz is ready?
<Kuanbyr> Alisa Uh-Lisa, there is always out the cursor at the bottom and left click, hold it down and drag up then ctl+c and paste into a word processor.
<MarkBremmerBug> Claywoman, Yes there are but it depends if any are close to where you live.
<MarkBremmerBug> You bet Tim. :)
<Claywoman> ok I will check into that , thanks Mark :)
<timvtc1> OK.. talk to you soon,, thanks again!
<MarkBremmerBug> See 'ya Tim
<Alisa Uh-Lisa> Thanks, kuanbyr - that doesn't work in firefox, unfortunately. I'll just have to hope they put this up quickly so I can get the great tutorial info - got the pics, but not the rest
<Ducksy> Bye Mark ;)
<MarkBremmerBug> Well folks, if there are no more questions, I've got deadlines to slay.
<Claywoman> Thanks again!
<Kuanbyr> Thanks again Mark.
