Featured Chat - Jarrod Phillips 10/19/06

Special Guest: DAZ_Biggie

<DAZ_Rhyno> Hi everyone, welcome to today's featured chat!
<DAZ_Biggie> Hello, hello, hello, welcome everyone! Good to see you all here... :)
<DAZ_Rhyno> We're excited to welcome Jarrod Phillips. If you'd like to ask him a question please click on @Questionbot in the right column
<DAZ_Rhyno> Hi Jarrod :)
<DAZ_Biggie> Glad to be here... just so everyone knows, doing a chat was not my idea... ;)
<DAZ_Biggie> Jeff suggested it

<idiot_sphinx> How did you get started in computers
<DAZ_Biggie> I was in colllege studying acting
<DAZ_Biggie> and a friend of mine offered me a job as a receptionist and accounts payable for a small printing company...
<DAZ_Biggie> from there I moved into sales and became the #2 salesman at that company
<DAZ_Biggie> my biggest account was with Viewpoing Datalabs in Orem, UT
<DAZ_Biggie> They hired me away to do biz dev for them...
<DAZ_Biggie> that was my first experience with CG and computers
<DAZ_Biggie> *Viewpoint
<DAZ_Biggie> oopsie
<DAZ_Biggie> ;)
<DAZ_Biggie> *E*
* DAZ_Biggie begs forgiveness for typonese

<amsolano> while in the video game industry what roles did you have?
<DAZ_Biggie> Good question...
<DAZ_Biggie> After Viewpoint, I went to work for BioVision in San Francisco..
<DAZ_Biggie> we were doing lots of motion capture for the game industry
<DAZ_Biggie> BioVision was pretty much the only game in town for that then
<DAZ_Biggie> I left there after a year and went out on my own doing consulting for about 6 months...
<DAZ_Biggie> and then got an offer to go work for House of Moves in LA...
<DAZ_Biggie> They only had 4 employees at the time...
<DAZ_Biggie> I started there as Director of Sales/ Marketing
<DAZ_Biggie> and eventually became their executive producer and Senior VP
<DAZ_Biggie> so my gigs in games, film, entertainment have primarily been business-related...
<DAZ_Biggie> of course there was that creative part of me that always wanted to do other stuff...
<DAZ_Biggie> so I directed some shoots for various game cinematics while at House of Moves
<DAZ_Biggie> I also started a record label while there that was a spectacular failure :)
<DAZ_Biggie> I liked being in a creative milieu, but was still looking for a creative outlet for myself
<DAZ_Biggie> I met tons of celebs, actors, atheletes, writers, Special FX gurus...
<DAZ_Biggie> and got to learn a ton of stuff from my association with those folks...
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>

<mcvdaz> Did jeff twist your arm?
<DAZ_Biggie> um, no.... :)
<DAZ_Biggie> I have gotten over my terminal shyness witrh lots of therapy and medication... ;)

<mattymanx> What is the least exciting?
<mattymanx> What is the most exciting thing about your job?
<DAZ_Biggie> My job now? well, I love this community we've created...
<DAZ_Biggie> Jeff and Ryan and the other guys at DAZ have started something that I feel is truly wonderful...
<DAZ_Biggie> Our membership has gone from 150 in April to over 13,000 today, so that's pretty exciting...
<DAZ_Biggie> The least exciting thing? Having to ban people for being jerk-offs (can I say that on TV?!) lol
<DAZ_Biggie> now, I'd like to talk a little about some of my photos...
<DAZ_Biggie> I never really shot much photography before working with DAZ...
<DAZ_Biggie> But I figured if I was going to be running this site with these guys, I should have something to show for it
<DAZ_Biggie> so I bought a cheap Canon digital camera and started shooting...

<Va1erie> April of what year?
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> April of '06...
<DAZ_Rhyno> (Remeber to send questions to @Questionbot to get them into the queue for Jarrod otherwise we won't see them)
<DAZ_Biggie> These pics are some of the first ones I took after starting work here at DAZ...
<DAZ_Biggie> I went to Chicago for my sister's graduation from the master's program at U of C...
<DAZ_Biggie> that pic of the statue was taken in the dark, and I loved the way it came out looking almost like midday...
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> This is another from Chicago, U of C campus... I just thought the natural contrast of the shot and the
<DAZ_Biggie> design of the gargoyle were cool...
<DAZ_Biggie> This next one was taken of a sculpture in downtown Chicago dubbed "the bean"...
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> in fact, the most post I usually do on any given shot is to crop it....
<DAZ_Biggie> however for this shot, I did a color shift for the Hell of it...
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> this image has gotten more comments from folks here on the site than any other... Which was interesting to me...
<DAZ_Biggie> I walked under the bean and shot straight up with my flash on... there is no post here...

<BlackSpartan> Sounds like a fun ride. What are your responsibilities now?
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> I handle all the biz dev/ marketing for ArtZone...
<DAZ_Biggie> book featured chat guests (ahem)
<DAZ_Biggie> work to coordinate the promotions with DAZ...
<DAZ_Biggie> I'm on the site almost 24/7
<DAZ_Biggie> I religiously check bulletins for new images and try to comment on new stuff that I like
<DAZ_Biggie> I also run my own company... Curiously Strong Entertainment...

<Dilli_ Pyckles> Do you still use your Canon or did you upgrade to higher quality camera?
<Nester751> Very nice photos! Thank you for sharing them!
<DAZ_Biggie> I rep game developers and art, animation offshore outsourcing companies
<DAZ_Biggie> I have a Canon Powershot a530
<DAZ_Biggie> Thanks Nes...
<DAZ_Biggie> This next series of shots was taken at the state fair of Utah a couple of months ago...
<DAZ_Biggie> I call them "carnivale"
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> my fave here is 'Zoom" which is that last one above...
<DAZ_Biggie> I was trying to capture the surreal atmosphere they try to create with a carnivale...
<DAZ_Biggie> people are swept around by all the lights, mechanical rides, etc...
<DAZ_Biggie> kind of like humanity in a blender... lol
<DAZ_Biggie> *E*
* DAZ_Biggie sips non-fat latte

<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> The first one there is my daughter, Kate... 'diva'
<DAZ_Biggie> the second I call 'legion'

<skyewolf_images> what made you choose the photos you chose to show us today?
<Nester751> Do you find that you set up a photographic shot or do more the spur of the moment, say while seeing a wonderful image?
<DAZ_Biggie> I picked these because they're my favorites... :)
<DAZ_Biggie> I try to capture things 'as-is' (or I guess proper English would be 'as-are'?)

<ghost_13> Of all the shots that you take , what is a rough percentage that you feel are worth sharing and showing off?
<DAZ_Biggie> I don't move stuff around, I don't do post work, I just take what I get... :)
<jt11611> the shot of your daughter truly displays what a difference black and white can make to an image, excellent job
<DAZ_Biggie> Thanks JT
<DAZ_Biggie> I usually get a shot I'm happy with about a third of the time
<DAZ_Biggie> Here are a couple from a recent trip to NY...
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>

<mcvdaz> jarrod, isd it true you let others use your photos for non-commercial uses?
<DAZ_Biggie> Rockafeller Center and St. Peter's Basilica
<DAZ_Biggie> yes, that's true, as l;ong as I'm credited :)
<DAZ_Biggie> If any of you ever want to use a shot for paid work, talk to me, I'm sure we can work something out :)

<FireDust> Whats your favorite subject when taking pictures - nature, buildings, people, etc?
<DAZ_Biggie> I love architecture, landscapes...
<DAZ_Biggie> My shots of people don't usually come out the way I want...
<DAZ_Biggie> 'course part of that is my camera...
<DAZ_Biggie> shutter speed is too slow
<DAZ_Biggie>

<Nester751> How do you generally decide between using black and white film and color for a specific image?
<wolfstarcreations> i really like the church picture
<DAZ_Biggie> That's a pic I took at Melissa (who some of you may know from ArtZone) at a concert...
<DAZ_Biggie> the smoky effect was an accident, but I thought it looked pretty cool
<DAZ_Biggie> thanks wolf

<Risika75> "The Post" is one of my favs of your photos. Where was it taken?
<DAZ_Biggie> I usually take different variations of different things with different camera settings...

<D_Mentia> did you do post work on the guitar man??
<DAZ_Biggie> one of the settings I vary is color vs. B&W
<DAZ_Biggie> no post on smokehead...
<DAZ_Biggie> the smoke effect came from my cigarette :)
<DAZ_Biggie> *E*
* DAZ_Biggie admits he is a smoker, bows head in shame

<DAZ_Biggie> lol
<DAZ_Biggie>

<wawadave 1> try bryce 6 yet?
<DAZ_Biggie> I'm not a big 3D user... The last time I used Bryce was when I worked at Viewpoint more than 12 years ago...
<DAZ_Biggie> I got a free copy of the first version from the guys at Kai's (I think it was at the time) and it took so long to render on my Mac, that I gave up... lol

<Kittylitter> With you salving away all day to make AZ better for us AND your own company AND your family, how do you find the time to go out photograph ... or even eat and sleep?
<DAZ_Biggie> I don't
<DAZ_Biggie> ;)

<Scatha> Jarrod, have you pondered on going to europe to photograph architecture, with all the historical sites there are?
<DAZ_Biggie> ok, I eat more than I should, don't sleep much, and take my kids on eht weekends...

<salashin> do you have much architectural photos from outside the US?
<DAZ_Biggie> I'm divorced so their mom has them most of the time
<DAZ_Biggie> I have a few from Bucharest, but don't have the links handy...
<DAZ_Biggie> They are on my AZ profile though...
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> these shots come from Kennecot mine here in UT... World's largest open-pit mine (how proud we are...) ;)

<azoohouse> Why haven't you invested in a better camera?
<DAZ_Biggie> I remember those viewers from I was a kid
<DAZ_Biggie> and I just think that they're so iconic...
<DAZ_Biggie> oh, I've been doing my research, believe me... :)
<DAZ_Biggie> I just want to make sure I get one with the features I want/ need...
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> I'm gonna post the rest of my pics now...
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> and then we can talk about the future of AZ
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_SSS>
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> All these shots are in my gallery, so feel free to check them out and leave comments
<DAZ_Biggie> I love seeing what people think of my work (don't we all? :))

<Terrell> Heya Jarrod! my questions is, do you think that with all the new technology and requirements for college degrees that "naturally talented" artists are being left out of the new job market moreso than before?
<DAZ_Biggie> I don't think so...
<DAZ_Biggie> I think maybe some mediocre talent and folks with no drive or ambition get left behind...
<DAZ_Biggie> but I think the truly talented get noticed regardless
<DAZ_Biggie> and all of the companies I have ever worked with look for talent first, and will train the tech...

<RosettaStone> You should come for a visit to washington we have some beautiful scenery to photograph :) It's not that far!
<DAZ_Biggie> I have lots of friends in Washington... So I'll let you know next time I'm up. Thanks for the invite.

<DarkAngel612> So what and how did you get started with Daz...I am a real new one at these things
<DAZ_Biggie> I met Dan and Chris while we were working at Viewpoint many years ago...
<DAZ_Biggie> Dan is a good friend of mine and we've kept in touch over the years...
<DAZ_Biggie> They've been very good to me. :)

<Faerie Fanatic> What are some of the changes or features you have planned for ArtZone?
<DarkMindBurning> In the coming year, what is your vision for Artzone.
<BluesDragon> what are some of the things we should watch for in ArtZone in the next few months?
<NaomiSullivan> So, are you in charge of the way the artzone works? If so, I'm wondering if there is going to be a search feature added that will help with finding specific artists/pictures.
<DAZ_Biggie> "I have a dream..."
<DAZ_Biggie> lol

<BetterThanLife> How soon are we going to see things like proper forums?
<shadowfire87> What future plans are cooking for the AZ?
<manikus> What are some upcoming features of Artzone that you would like to share with us?
<GalaxyStorme> What do you see for the future in this community and business?
<DAZ_Biggie> well!
<DAZ_Biggie> We are just beginning a ground-up rebuild of the site right now as we speak...
<DAZ_Biggie> The original code-base we used was a solution we picked up out the box, and it has had some serious issues...
<DAZ_Biggie> the way the code was written has made it difficult to add mew features and even to fix some bugs...
<DAZ_Biggie> however, that code base allowed us to get started and up and running quickly so be thankful for that ;)
<DAZ_Biggie> However, there are lots of features we want to add, ecommerce will be coming soon, we want artists
<DAZ_Biggie> to be able to set up their own storefronts
<DAZ_mattw> *E*
* DAZ_mattw sets fire to the old code and then buries the body deep

<DAZ_Biggie> we also want to make it easier to track favorite artists and friends...
<DAZ_Biggie> find the art that you are most interested in...
<DAZ_Biggie> and bring in more fans and artists ...
<DAZ_Biggie> ultimately, though, the site grows the most when you invite your friends and people you know...
<DAZ_Biggie> the bigger the membership, the faster we'll be able to effectuate the changes that will really make the site more powerful and intuitive.

<Anole> Jarrod, will you ever be paying your bar tab? It's longer than my tail and at 14lbs of crickets...
<DAZ_Biggie> so invite your friends
<DAZ_Biggie> lol, Anole...

<RosettaStone> Can we email you with suggestions on people we'd like to see in Featured Chat? I have a few I'd love to see :)
<DAZ_Biggie> *E*
* DAZ_Biggie hands a bottle of Jagermeister to the anoles (hush)

<DAZ_Biggie> yes, but not all at one... ;)

<idiot_sphinx> Who would you most like to have on featured chat ?
<DAZ_Biggie> *once
<DAZ_Biggie> I've invited Linda Berkqvist (sp), but gotten no response yet...
<DAZ_Biggie> HR Giger has been invited, but his agent has been slow to respond...

<PickersAngel> what does a typical day for the director of Art Zone involve?
<DAZ_Biggie> There are other folks we've asked, but we're still working out scheduling...

<Nester751> WOW! Great!
<DAZ_Biggie> typical day? lol
<DAZ_Biggie> I wake up, start working from home, go to the office where I work some more, go home, eat, work, go to sleep...

<jt11611> these features sound very promising, do you think it will take a very long time to put them into effect?
<jt11611> can we also email suggestions for site modifications? or do you prefer the forum for that?
<DAZ_Biggie> You'll have to ask the dev team on that... All I know is that the code base is being worked on now...
<DAZ_Biggie> and once that's done, we'll be able to start adding more features more quickly...
<DAZ_Biggie> the best thing to do with ArtZone modification suggestions is to go through DAZ customer service...
<DAZ_Biggie> that way the suggestions will be logged and tracked

<Corona> What about Kai? Invite him?
<mattymanx> Can you invite Luis Royo?
<DAZ_Biggie> I have talked to Kai in years... you have his email? ;)

<DAZ_Kevin> I hear you were voted second best looking at DAZ after Kevin... is that true? How came in third?
<DAZ_Biggie> Kevin, you are a retard
<DAZ_Biggie> I love you, but you are a retard... lol

<skyewolf_images> Can we ask Matt to come do a featured chat ;)
<DAZ_Biggie> Matt McConaghey??
<DAZ_mattw> *E*
* DAZ_mattw paints code murals

<DAZ_mattw> *E*
* DAZ_mattw gets out his bongos

<DAZ_mattw> I want someone to recruit doug schuler
<DAZ_Biggie> *E*
* DAZ_Biggie sings lead vocals

<bernards> How does ArtZone fit into DAZ Productions strategic plans?
<azoohouse> If you could do it all again what would change if anything?
<DAZ_Biggie> Well, I think it's fairly obvious that a community like this bolster the presence of DAZ in the industry...
<DAZ_Biggie> I like it because I get to work with your folks and enjoy your work.
<DAZ_Biggie> I am blown away on a daily basis at the quality of the work on the site, and am just glad to be able to do what I do to not get in your way too much. :)
<DAZ_Biggie> What would I change...?
<DAZ_Biggie> hmmmmm

<DAZ_mattw> not to upstage the man himself, but I can say that I see DAZ's mission about empowering the artists, whether novice or professional. So if it helps you make it, sell it, share it, we want to help do it.
<DAZ_Biggie> I guess I would have gone to work for Google several years ago... and borrowed money up to my eyeballs to invest in it
<DAZ_Biggie> Ryan, do we have the winners of the Bryce 6 Content DVD?
<DAZ_Rhyno> congrats to: designerdragon, maartenvs, gotchan, 3DFineArtist, phuoclam24, gabibbo
<DAZ_Biggie> congrats!

<D_Mentia> what was it that made the record label fail??
<DAZ_Biggie> oh Lord...
<DAZ_Biggie> lol
<DAZ_Biggie> that's waaaaaaay too long a story for the time we have (or don't have...)
<DAZ_Biggie> as they say at the end of Conan... "but that is another story..."
<DAZ_Biggie> Thank you all for coming! Much appreciated.
<DAZ_Rhyno> OK everyone, you're free! Fly!
