Special Guest: Jake Parker
|
<DAZ_mattw> hi everyone. I think we should be getting started soon, so we'll go moderated
<DAZ_SSS> Hey everyone we're about ready to begin
<DAZ_SSS> I'd like to intorduct Jake Parker, a guest we've been looking forward to
<DAZ_SSS> Jake is an environmental designer at Fox Animation Studios
<DAZ_SSS> currently working on "Horton Hears a Who"
<DAZ_SSS> She is actually working for BlueSky Studios
<DAZ_SSS> which is owned ny 20th Century Fox
<DAZ_SSS> Jake would you like to tell us a little about your background and history
<Jake Parker> sure
<Jake Parker> i have always drwn
<DAZ_SSS> and the word "she" is a typo......Jake is a male...sorry everyone
<Jake Parker> i gre up drawing just like any kid
<Jake Parker> but ireally started taking it seriously in jr high and high school
<Jake Parker> after taking classes at a community college
<Jake Parker> i got an oppurtunity to send in a portfolio
<Jake Parker> in to fox animation studios
<Jake Parker> in Pheonix
<Jake Parker> i got hired on as an "in betweener"
<Jake Parker> so i decided to drop out of school and try my luck in the art field
<Jake Parker> i worked there for about a year and 1/2 before fox animations studio shut down
<Jake Parker> to make a long story short
<Jake Parker> between then and now i have done a little bit of everything
<Jake Parker> working at a history museum doing exhibits
<Jake Parker> worked at a korean video game company in LA
<Jake Parker> did some graphic design
<Jake Parker> and comercial work
<Jake Parker> all along the way i have been doing my own projects on the side
<Jake Parker> and here is some of my personal art work
<DAZ_SSS>
<DAZ_SSS>
<Jake Parker> so i guess you can say that i have been really lucky
<Jake Parker> i have been having a good time doing what i really love to do
<DAZ_SSS>
<DAZ_SSS>
<Jake Parker> the pink illustration with the robot girl

<Jake Parker> is a commision, a color book guys who do new york city mach
<Jake Parker> mechs*
<Jake Parker> they basically gave me a free range to do my own thing
<Jake Parker> about robots who live in new york city
<Jake Parker> the little robot with bird piece
<Jake Parker> is an ink wash
<Jake Parker> and that was done for a story i did in the FLIGHT anthology
<Jake Parker> the FLIGHT anthology is short stories written and drawn by various artists
<Jake Parker> the other two pieces the tree and the flying witch
<Jake Parker> are for another story that i hope to do in the future
<Dolphins-Dreams> Jake, thanks for being here. What or who inspires you to design?
<Jake Parker> I get a lot of inspiration from various artists like anybody else
<Jake Parker> there are some artist in particular
<Jake Parker> namely Myazaki
<Jake Parker> Shiro
<Jake Parker> Shirow*
<Jake Parker> and Mignola
<Jake Parker> and my fellow FLIGHT compadres
<Jake Parker> on the upside of artists, i go to the library a lot
<Jake Parker> and go through old books
<Jake Parker> and try to find books that have been out of print
<Jake Parker> usually you will find stuff that is out of the pop cutural conceinceness
<Jake Parker> and there i will find just crazy stuff
<Jake Parker> stuff that people have not seen in a long time or things i have never seen
<Jake Parker> and i try to add these things to my own art and my own stories
<Jake Parker> i dont jsut look at art book
<Jake Parker> books*
<Jake Parker> i like to look at photography, animal and arcitectural books too
<Jake Parker> also i love national geographic
<Jake Parker> you can pick up any issue of National geographic
<Jake Parker> and just the number of possibilities you can do, the older ones mainly
<Jake Parker> im not so much into the newer versions
<Jake Parker> to go along with this
<Jake Parker> i have a sort of philosiphy on influince and inspiration
<Jake Parker> and that is that your brain is like a bank and if you are sitting there
<Jake Parker> you want an idea you want to make a withdrawl
<Jake Parker> you need to have made deposits prior to that
<Jake Parker> and so just as you would deposit checks , you would put some aside for savings
<Jake Parker> and that money there sits in the bank and gathers intrest
<Jake Parker> just like ideas
<Dranem> What is your favorite art medium?
<DAZ_SSS> To ask a question for Jake, please send a private message to the QuestionBot - click on QuestionBot on the right hand side of your chat window to send the private message, and that will queue it up for a moderator
<Jake Parker> my favorite art medium
<Jake Parker> i would say is
<Jake Parker> probably water colors
<Jake Parker> i dont do it a lot just because i dont have a lot of time
<Jake Parker> but when i do get time i love to use water colors
<Jake Parker> i love to use photoshop
<Jake Parker> it is quick and clean angd you can get
<Jake Parker> that nice paintery quality and a nice range of colors
<Jake Parker> lately i have been doing a lot of nice graphite drawings
<Jake Parker> just trying to work more with values than lines
<Jake Parker> I want to share with you guys an image that i did
<Jake Parker> this is an older one, but some of the things i learned on this one i have applied throughout all the stuff i have done
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> i am going to show you mty process on how to make a nice looking 3 dimensinal image
<Jake Parker> first this is my base line work
<Jake Parker> once you have your line work down
<Jake Parker> i take it into photoshop and i set this as my top layer
<Jake Parker> i set to multiply
<Jake Parker> and then what i will do is find a nice texture of mitalic
<Jake Parker> in this case it is a tank so i want it a matalic texture
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> this one is a piece of flat medal
<Jake Parker> a picture i found and i cut it to fit the picture where all of the medal would be
<Jake Parker>
<DAZ_SSS> Click on images to make them larger
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> i then put that under the line art
<Jake Parker> then i will fill in the rest of the areas with color and then put those underneath
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> after that
<Jake Parker> i want texture for the treads
<Jake Parker> so i found a nice grainy texture
<Jake Parker> i think another matalic texture that i used for the treads
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> i set those one
<Jake Parker> ones*
<Jake Parker> to i believe it was multiply on top of the treads color
<Jake Parker> no it was overlay
<Jake Parker> not multiply
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> now we have a pretty good looking tank
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> but still lokks pretty flat so we are going to put in some shadows
<Jake Parker> in this image
<Jake Parker> is what i will do is i will select a section of the tank
<Jake Parker> and i will use a light air brush
<Jake Parker> and jsut take a color of black and add areas of shadow in places that need it
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> now the tank has a lot more depth
<Jake Parker> you can see there is a little more demesion to it
<Jake Parker> but we still need some highlight
<Jake Parker> so i will do a new layer which is with white air brush
<Jake Parker> and add in places where the brightest spots would be
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> i forgot to add that both the shadow and the white layer are set to overlay
<Jake Parker> the image here that is for the highlight layer
<Jake Parker> i just have it posted on black so that you can see the highlights
<Jake Parker> in your acctual image you would not do that you would just have it on a transparent layer
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> from here on out it is just going to be adding those few things that give the image a nice touch, add a cast shadow
<Jake Parker> and decals
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> the decals are set to overlay
<Jake Parker> as well
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> lastly i found, i took a picture of the street outside
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> and we are going to set that down as the ground plane
<Jake Parker>
<Jake Parker> and there we have a finished tank design
<Jake Parker> that looks hopefully somewhat believable
<Charlie Tuna> Jake, how do you like doing Seusian style art for 'Horton'?
<Jake Parker> that has been a lot of fun

<Jake Parker> studio has at least 3 copies of every single Dr. Sues book
<Jake Parker> and i have been through all of them 5 times at least
<Jake Parker> i would say it is probaly 2 weeks to get into the grove of Dr suess's style
<Jake Parker> groove*
<Jake Parker> but once you get it down
<Jake Parker> it is a lot of fun
<Jake Parker> the fun thing about it is thinking of things
<Jake Parker> in ways you wouldnt normally think
<Jake Parker> the hard part was trying to train yourself to not think logically
<Jake Parker> so lets say your designing a building
<Jake Parker> and normally you would
<Jake Parker> think about construction and basic laws, and gravity
<Jake Parker> and perspective
<Jake Parker> and you need to throw all of that out the window
<Jake Parker> and think about what is the funnest
<Jake Parker> and not worry about if it really works or not
<Jake Parker> for example you put a staircase
<Jake Parker> you would normally put it up to the front door
<Jake Parker> but in Suess's world that staircase wraps around the building and goes in the
<Jake Parker> side window
<Shoshanna> Have you come up with a new design for the Robot from The Robot & the Sparrow yet & do you still intend to create more adventures for them in the future?
<Jake Parker> the robots design is pretty much staying the same
<Jake Parker> unless something brilliant pops into my head
<Jake Parker> the story that was in FLIGHT
<Jake Parker> is just one piece of a much bigger story
<Jake Parker> i want to tell about where he came from
<Jake Parker> and where he is headed
<Jake Parker> some day down the line i will get a chance to explore that a little more
<Neo10> I see you have an image in your gallery from Image comics Invincible .A comic i read... care to explain on that a bit? do you or have you worked on that comic at all ?
<DAZ_SSS> To ask a question for Jake, please send a private message to the QuestionBot - click on QuestionBot on the right hand side of your chat window to send the private message, and that will queue it up for a moderator
<Jake Parker> i love invincible
<Jake Parker> i just got into it this year
<Jake Parker> and after reading through all the graphic novels
<Jake Parker> i had to do a piece of fan art for it
<Jake Parker> so it is just a personal piece of work that
<Jake Parker> wasnt for anything
<Jake Parker> but just for fun becasue i like the book
<manikus> Do you plan on doing more work in comics?
<Jake Parker> yes i do
<Jake Parker> currently i am working on my
<Jake Parker> submission for FLIGHT 4
<Jake Parker> which is a missle mouse
<Jake Parker> and after FLIGHT 4
<Jake Parker> missle mouse adventure, sorry
<Jake Parker> and after FLIGHT 4
<Jake Parker> me and my studio mates are
<Jake Parker> doing a book, or sequil to a comic anthology
<Jake Parker> that they all just finished this year
<Jake Parker> called OUT OF PICTURE
<Jake Parker> and i hope to do more comic stuff
<xavierpayne> We've all seen remakes we love and remakes gone bad. In doing a remake of Horton Hears a Who is it hard to find the balance between restoring something and making it too new?
<Jake Parker> yeah, i have full confidence in the directors
<Jake Parker> right off the bat they were very adimate
<Jake Parker> that this movie would have
<Jake Parker> zero reference to pop culture
<Jake Parker> that the movie would be timeless the best that we could
<Jake Parker> like his books
<Jake Parker> so, you wont see any Paris Hilton
<Jake Parker> camios
<Jake Parker> or product diet pepsi product placement
<Jake Parker> and we are jsut trying to make the best movie that we can
<Jake Parker> that is still something that the kids will like and parents would like
<Jake Parker> it will be a trip
<Jake Parker> for sure
<DAZ_mattw> ok

<DAZ_SSS> ok one last question
<sazzyazzca> What would be the ultimate project for you to work on and why? Who did you most enjoy working with or for and why? What project are you most proud of? What is your favorite type of project to work on?
<Jake Parker> i would love to do my own graphic novel
<Jake Parker> because i love doing comics and i love doing comics because i get to be
<Jake Parker> the director, the concept artist, the writer,
<Jake Parker> i get to be everything rolled into one
<Jake Parker> and i love reading comics by writer artist
<Jake Parker> like the influences i mentioned earlier
<Jake Parker> because you get to see what is exactly in their head
<Jake Parker> there is no filter
<Jake Parker> what they thought of in their head is what you see on the comic page
<Jake Parker> next, i loved working with william joyce
<Jake Parker> and the guys at reel fx in Dallas
<Jake Parker> they are an amazingly creative group of people
<Jake Parker> they taught me a lot of how to tackle projects creativly
<Jake Parker> I should also say that i really love working with the art department here at BlueSky as well
<Jake Parker> the pool of talent in that department, they have been great resorce for honing my artistic abilities
<Jake Parker> what project am i most proud of, would be the work i have done in FLIGHT
<Jake Parker> it has been a great experience and a great learning experience as well
<DAZ_SSS> Thanks so much Jake for sharing your knowledge and talent with us. This has been a very interesting chat and we all appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule for us.
