<JuliAdamsArt> Hi Everybody

<DAZ_Biggie> Juli, what first got your interested in art?
<JuliAdamsArt> I was born interested in art and was drawing like any child, but I never did stop doing that.
<JuliAdamsArt> It was really in college that I was introduced to art during an art history class. It was a mind blowing experience because I was seeing people like me for the first time.
<indispace> which artists influenced you the most early in your work?
<JuliAdamsArt> The first influences were illustrated children
<DAZ_Biggie>
<JuliAdamsArt> books. Maurice Sendack and Suess. Then it was cartoons and comics. Bugs Bunny and Charlie Brown. I lOVED Snoopy
<debb6425> Hello Julie, Thank you for speaking with us today... I am wondering have you tried CG's and if so, which programs did you work with?
<JuliAdamsArt> I have not worked with computer graphics other than Photoshop to prepare works for output printing. I am most interested in fine art, and I don't see myself creating work on the computer. I would however, love to see someone else animate my work.
<skyewolf> You have such a unique vision and style, where do you pull your ideas from?
<JuliAdamsArt> People ask me that a lot. I don't have a specific place that my work comes from. It's the way that I see and process the world, so it could be anything, at any time.
<bernards> Juli...thanks for coming today...what medium do you prefer to work in - watercolor, acrlic paint, oils, etc?
<debb6425> What is your favorite medium?
<JuliAdamsArt> My favorite medium right now is oil paints. I also dearly love sculpting in clay.
<skyewolf> Your artwork would make fantastic illustrations for children's books, have you ever considered the idea of doing a book?'
<JuliAdamsArt> Yes, I have considered that. I would have to write it, too as I'm not an illustrator. It would all have to come from me. I hope that someday it happens.
<DAZ_Biggie> Can you tell us about anything you are currently working on?
<DAZ_Biggie>
<JuliAdamsArt> I am currently working on value paintings of drawings I created at fairs. I do a lot of sitting at fairs and so I use that time to come up with new ideas. It will be somewhat of a departure for me, so I hope that people respond well to the new work
<bernards> What sorts of problems did you encounter as you became a full-time professional artist?
<DAZ_Rhyno> To ask Juli a question, please click on @Questionbot on the right
<JuliAdamsArt> I think the biggest problem was that no one thought it was possible so there wasn't much support. I had to make it up as I went along. What ever problem did occur, I ended up using to my advantage. For instance...I had no place to show, so my first show was at a friends apartment. It was a smashing success. :)
<ImmortalImaging> I see a lot of Edward Gorey, Lemony Snicket and Tim Burton in your workds. Do they influence you at all?
<JuliAdamsArt> I hear that a lot. I like Tim Burton, but he is not an influence.
<skyewolf> My son is just starting to show an enormous interest (and talent as well) in art, is there anything in particular you remember from your childhood that spurred you on, kept you interested?
<JuliAdamsArt> I could not help but be interested in art. It was in me. But it might not be a bad idea to talk to him about how other people have thrived and succeeded in art so he is not afraid to jump in.
<bernards> What sort of audience do you find is drawn to your unique artistic style?
<JuliAdamsArt> Liberals
<DAZ_Biggie> Don't be shy folks... submit your questions to QuestionBot... :)
<indispace> I like the mood and feel you create with your work. Could you elaborate on your instinctive and/or deliberate use of lighting and shading.
<JuliAdamsArt> Light is the most important aspect of painting. I use lighting and color to make the viewers eyes see what I want them to see....to pay attention to the parts of the painting that I want to create impact around. I like brooding characters that are sort of cute at first, but a bit staring and hollow eyed when you get closer.
<DAZ_Biggie>
<AlmightyQUEST> You designed the catalogue for the Men's and Women's chorus in 2004/2005, have you done anything else like that since, or do you plan to?
<JuliAdamsArt> I've done a few theatre posters and city art walk posters. I can't say what I will end up doing. If something captures my fancy, I usually jump on it. I have designed a toy line for Hartz. That should be coming out soon.
<bernards> Can you describe a typical work day for you?
<DAZ_Biggie> To ask Juli a question, click on the QuestionBot on the right hand side of the chat window and send your question as a private message to the Qbot.
<JuliAdamsArt> Wake up, coffee in my plushy rocking chair and as I drink coffee I look at the work from the day before and see what needs work. I usually start painting 30 minutes after waking up. I 'll usually work at least 8 hours a day.
<ghost_13> you characters are so different and weird in a col sort of way, did you find it hard at first for people to accept your style?
<JuliAdamsArt> I am happy to say that people seemed to like the style right away. I guess I lucked out there!

<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> my bad... oopsie
<DAZ_Biggie> Does anyone have specific questions about any of the pieces here? :)
<skyewolf> your bio says you've been drawing all your life, when was it that you realized that you could actually succeed in art as a career?
<JuliAdamsArt> I always knew that I would succeed. It was a feeling in my guts. But it took a long time to trust my guts. I had to teach myself to act according to what I deeply knew instead of what other people told me.
<indispace> It is said that some writers seclude themselves to get work done. Do you ever find yourself doing anthing like that?
<JuliAdamsArt> I have to paint in my studio. I have what I need there. But I can draw anywhere.
<Skip Dahlgren> Julie, could you please say something about the pieces that you are showing, describing them or explaining what inspires some of these individual pieces?
<JuliAdamsArt> The piece with the three staring characters...Familial Landscape. That was a play on landscapes, as well as a response to family dynamics. How people can be family but be totally separate and not unifyed. On my website there is a sister piece called Reunion with the same three characters with a burning house in the background. That was the piece that brought the family together. The beautiful disaster.
<DAZ_Biggie> How about this one, Juli?
<DAZ_Biggie>
<JuliAdamsArt> This is what happened in my house every day. One cat would loom over the other and both would growl and then a spitting clawing fight and then washing and nap time.
<debb6425> Do any of your characters in your drawings pertain to people you know?
<JuliAdamsArt> Not specifically, no. It's more like everything that I know mixes up inside me and comes out in the wierd fashion that it does
<skyewolf> some of your work almost borders on satirical humor or caricature. Do you find yourself seeing people that way when you look at them on the street? Putting them in paintings in your head and storing it away for later?
<JuliAdamsArt> Oh, yes. I see everything in the form of satire. I don't really store it away on purpose, but I know it's in there somewhere. :)
<debb6425> I see quite a few animal drawings/ paintings...Are any of them your pet(s) or just animals off the street, so to speak?
<JuliAdamsArt> I just lost one cat, but I had two not long ago. I now have one. I am in love with my cats. Birds amuse me, and small dogs crack me up. The big dogs are all fashioned after a lab we had who was the best lab ever.
<DAZ_Biggie> To ask Juli a question, click on the QuestionBot on the right hand side of the chat window and send your question as a private message to the Qbot.
<ghost_13> you pay a lot of attietion to the eyes of your characters, is there a reason for that
<DAZ_Biggie>
<JuliAdamsArt> Eyes are the connection between the outside world and your brain. They are truly the window of the soul. If someone is looking at you, you know it. There is power there. Communication.
<ghost_13> so you incorporate a lot of personal symbolism into your art
<JuliAdamsArt> Yes, I do.
<bernards> Not being a professional artist, I'm curious as to the differences between fine art versus computer art
<JuliAdamsArt> I have not yet formed a complete opinion on that. I think that creating art with paint or clay or metal is hard. It teaches you a lot about yourself, and about why the world looks that way it does. Why objects contain a peronality. I don't often get that from computer art, unless it's animated.
<DAZ_Biggie>
<DAZ_Biggie> can you tell us about "pilgrimmage to the carousel"? :)
<DAZ_Biggie> To ask Juli a question, click on the QuestionBot on the right hand side of the chat window and send your question as a private message to the Qbot.
<JuliAdamsArt> This piece is about what is alien. They were inspired loosley on monks. The question here is, who are they? What are they doing? They are a little scary. A little angry. A little alien. I like to watch people react to them because they are not human. It's telling.
<DAZ_Biggie> Don't be embarrassed to ask more questions... just submit them to Qbot... :)
<DAZ_Biggie> That's a fantastic image... reminds me of the saying, "if momma ain't hapy, ain't nobody happy..." :)
<JuliAdamsArt> Yeah, I think so too. Maybe there was some little altercation...
<DAZ_Biggie> Is there any kind of art that you've always wanted to try that maybe you haven't tried yet?
<JuliAdamsArt> oh my gosh...yes! Bronze, wood, any number of installation works, glass....
<DAZ_Biggie> what compels you about those media?
<JuliAdamsArt> Well...the way they feel. Smell. The process. The three dimensionality.
<DAZ_Biggie>
<Arien> hello, nice to see you here! You have a very distinctive style, can you give advice to those that are trying to develop theirs but are maybe not sure of how to do so?
<JuliAdamsArt> That's a tricky question because I didn't develop my 'style' on purpose. It's who I am. The only thing I can say that might help is..keep working at what is a little bit over your head and see what happens. Challenge yourself, and something will come up.
<MasterWolf> there is a real sense of movement to your work, have you ever considered animating your characters?
<JuliAdamsArt> They are animated...but it's all in my head. I have no patience with the actual process of animation, but someday I hope I can get a team together and create something. That would be a dream come true.
<bedlamsbard> juli, is your work in clay simular to the characters you use in your paintings and do you have any exmples of your sculptures
<JuliAdamsArt> The clay works are a little looser. Clay is so different...but I am starting to create works in clay to paint from. I don't have any expamples....yet.
<skyewolf> do you ever use your art to work out your emotions? do they reflect the mood of when they were created?
<JuliAdamsArt> I don't work out my emotions by painting, but I do paint what my mood is. Like the little painting above...it was painted during the last elections. Eck.
<Arien> your art seems to have a very bold and striking use of colours. I know a few of us tend to like playing it safe sometimes when it comes to colour palette, and wish we could be more bold, any suggestions?
<JuliAdamsArt> Try it. What have you got to lose?
<azoohouse> Who is your favorite artist/s?
<DAZ_Biggie>
<JuliAdamsArt> There are so very many, but a few are: Emile Kazaz, Burke Breathed, Modigliani, Klimpt, Bacon
<maars_girl> Hi Juli....I was just wondering if you thought that someone being taught art is as sucessful as someone having that passion for creativity inside them.
<JuliAdamsArt> Of course. But I've seen people coming out of art school that are so afraid to actually create that they never do. I would say that knowing who you are should come first. Then the education.
<Arien> do you work solely as traditional artists, or have you done any work for publications or the like? If so, how have you found the experience of having creative input from third parties, or trying to work to a brief? Do you find it stiffles your creativity, or do you constantly get input from other people while you are working?
<JuliAdamsArt> I HATE illustration. I don't even like commissions. I have done work for publication under certain situations, but generally I don't. It most certainly stiffles my creativity. Some people can do it, but not me.
<ghost_13> where do you see (or would like to see) your art progressing to in the future? Are there things you would like to see it expanded or adapted to?
<JuliAdamsArt> That's a great question. I would love to adapt the work to animation, books, theatre sets, furniture....the sky is the limit!
