Featured Chat - David Roberts 3/29/07

Special Guest: David Roberts

<DAZ_melissamae> Hi everyone! We'd like to welcome David Roberts as our featured chat guest today. David Roberts was with Fractal Design, turned MetaCreations, when Carrara (now from Daz3D) and Enliven Pro (now from Viewpoint) were conceived. The two applications have always been designed to work naturally together for creating interactive 3D online experiences. Mr. Roberts, founder of Rich3D which specializes in interactive 3D on the web, shares how to use both applications and has several examples of exploiting this cutting edge approach to delivering 3D to the web.

<DrRich3D01> hello everyone...it is really fun to be here today
<DrRich3D01> I see a new world in the internet, which is not so flat
<DrRich3D01> currently we go from flat web to to flat web page
<DrRich3D01> lets change that
<DrRich3D01> in the future, 3D to the web will be commonplace
<DrRich3D01> you have the tools to change that now
<DrRich3D01> with the wonderful reunification of Carrara and Enliven
<DrRich3D01> so...throw out your questions
<FrederickRM> HI Dr Rich and Welcome. My first question is what are some good applications for Enliven other than the obvious gimmicky approach?
<DrRich3D01> I am a great lover of real world practical use...and I find that gimmicks are goofy and dont have legs
<DrRich3D01> so...what about creating online product experiences?
<DrRich3D01> let me give you an example...a link
<DrRich3D01> http://demos.viewpoint.com/VETBlueRibbon/Simmons_Master_Series/
<Kuanbyr> I'm not completely up to speed with Enliven, What can it do for me?
<DrRich3D01> this is a great example...of 3D in the middle of a web page
<DrRich3D01> with the voice over also included
<DrRich3D01> does that help you see?
<DrRich3D01> I have a few more examples
<DrRich3D01> ok...lets take a step back...and talk about the proces
<DrRich3D01> you can use Carrara (or other strong 3D applications such as 3DS or Maya)
<DrRich3D01> to create or modify 3D objects...add texture maps, and animations
<DrRich3D01> then...they naturally import into Enliven...to create the online interactivity
<DrRich3D01> publishing experiences to the web
<DrRich3D01> for free, for ever
<DrRich3D01> you may take your 3Ds models and make them interactive
<DrRich3D01> here is another example
<DrRich3D01> some have said that the link I gave may not work
<DrRich3D01> how about another
<DrRich3D01> http://c-moremicro.automationdirect.com/animation/index.html
<DrRich3D01> hey we should make a note here
<DrRich3D01> that the 3D scenes being shown need the viewpoint media player
<DrRich3D01> or the vmp
<DrRich3D01> please understand that the VMP is a plug-in that is naturally installed on every Dell, Gateway, Compaq/HP system
<DrRich3D01> also...every single AOL client has this technology naturally embedded
<DrRich3D01> it is in 70+% of all computers
<DrRich3D01> and...you can see how rapidly it installs
<rmash1948> Heyas Dr Rich. Thank you so very much for coming to chat with us. What advice do you have for someone just starting out using Carrara (or at least TRYING to use Carrara *chuckles*)
<DrRich3D01> using Carrara is a long term process...things can be done right away, but you will constantly be learning new tricks....
<DrRich3D01> ok, so the real answer...
<DrRich3D01> you need to take time to read the manual (RTFM) and understand the concept behind each room....
<DrRich3D01> there is more to it than reading the manual
<DrRich3D01> when you get the Carrara Enliven bundle, then you get three free training videos
<DrRich3D01> one of them is all about using carrara to create animations (in a couple of ways)
<DrRich3D01> then shows how to send it into Enliven, to then make the content interactive
<angusm> 3D hasn't really taken off on the desktop or the web ... so far (with the exceptions of games and virtual worlds). What are the killer apps that demand 3D?
<DrRich3D01> the killer application, the golden thread of use....to me it is all about creating interactive product experiences
<DrRich3D01> I mean if someon is able to go online and configure a product to make various choices...and see how it works
<DrRich3D01> interact with it, see the features, see the cost of adding various components...
<DrRich3D01> then...that person is more likely to buy it
<DrRich3D01> it is about real world practical use
<DrRich3D01> look at the example given about...the cell phone or the touch screen monitor
<DrRich3D01> the monitor is truly for sale...this example sells product for this client
<DrRich3D01> and it is the first example on the web
<DrRich3D01> of 3D in a merchant engine...hit the buy button and it works
<Burpee> You stopped everyone with the 'read the manual' comment, lol. What makes Enliven different from other's of the same kind?
<DrRich3D01> that was enliven
<DrRich3D01> price....tighly coupled with very deep potential
<DrRich3D01> any other offering of this nature costs thousands of dollars...
<DrRich3D01> plus...the vmp is everywhere, well nearly
<DrRich3D01> plus..I must say, ease of use
<DrRich3D01> (ok, you have to read and study a little too)
<DrRich3D01> but once you begin to understand the workflow, this is powerful magic
<DrRich3D01> and a low price...with great impact
<azoohouse> How long does it take to master these programs for the average Joe dedicated to learning?
<DrRich3D01> let me please make some assumptions...
<DrRich3D01> that you understand how 3D works in a computer
<DrRich3D01> first...that you know how to model an object, or use content from Daz3D
<DrRich3D01> and that you can work with texture maps and create animations
<DrRich3D01> so...then the content comes into Enliven fully intact
<DrRich3D01> models, texture maps, animations
<DrRich3D01> when you get Enliven, the other two videos show how to get going
<DrRich3D01> we worked carefully to explain how to create interface elements to trigger the interaction and animations
<DrRich3D01> so..I think you can be publishing by the end of the week
<kulay> How did you get started?
<DrRich3D01> oh wow...great question...I grew up in an art department and found myself with Fractal Design after college.
<DAZ_melissamae> to ask David a question, submit it as a private message to Questionbot in the upper right hand corner of the chat window.
<DrRich3D01> eventually I became known as the Guru of Painter
<DrRich3D01> oh, because I read the manual
<DrRich3D01> I was there when Carrara was conceived...the mixing of Ray Dream and Infini-D
<DrRich3D01> and we called Enliven something different...it was code named Reactor
<DrRich3D01> anyway, I have always been a visual person...and began to shift my interest in sculpture into the virtual world
<DrRich3D01> then the whole 3D to the web hit me
<DrRich3D01> so we started Rich3D to partner with Viewpoint
<DAZ_Biggie> Janecat would like to know how enliven would work in a movie animation
<DrRich3D01> ok, so what we haven't talked about is video
<DrRich3D01> ok, so what we haven't talked about is video
<DrRich3D01> ok, so what we haven't talked about is video
<DrRich3D01> oops,
<DrRich3D01> Enliven includes the On2 encoder for compressing video
<DrRich3D01> it is really cool...
<DrRich3D01> because movies can then be displayed as a texture map on an object
<DrRich3D01> or can be a background or foreground in the scene
<DrRich3D01> movies work really well, audio too
<DrRich3D01> or as a foreground or background
<WillDupre> I'm an Opera User I notice both of your links do not work with Opera though I can open them just fine with IE any chance of that changing soon?
<DrRich3D01> yes, by the middle of the year
<DrRich3D01> Viewpoint is working diligently on a modified VMP for the Mac
<DrRich3D01> I love macs,
<DrRich3D01> and Viewpoint understands the serious need to address the awesome group of creatives who are dedicated to the MacOS
<BetterThanLife> How does using Enliven work with the Daz EULA? Because according to the EULA you can't publish anything with Daz Content in a 3D format.
<DrRich3D01> I saw this one coming...from the forums, I think
<DrRich3D01> when you publish content to the web you are not messing with the EULA
<DrRich3D01> the content cant be converted from its low polycount web based delivery to then become something useable in your favorite 3D application
<DrRich3D01> publish at will, no problems
<3DFineArtist> does inliven have the same technology as is used in IMVU chat or is it more advanced than that?
<DrRich3D01> they are completely different...this is actually technology that has been modified and focused on for over a decade.
<DrRich3D01> I'd say it is much more advanced...and has no limit to what you will learn...seriously
<DrRich3D01> once you got it all nailed down, then we can start working on bi-directlional JavaScript use to really make things sing
<DrRich3D01> simple on the front end, bottomless pit of possibilities
<kulay> Is Enliven only for web use?
<DrRich3D01> well, it is for use in deploying content in a web browser, the browser can be hidden from view...
<DrRich3D01> a kiosk environment is another great use
<lordpaul> To publish the 3D content to the web do you have buy an expensive Lic key from viewpoint to display it? It is required to publish poser viewpoint content
<DrRich3D01> but, I must say...Yes, is your answer and the web is everywhere!
<DrRich3D01> oh no1
<DrRich3D01> the answer to that is not yes.
<DrRich3D01> that was from the prior question
<DrRich3D01> lets talk about licensing fees...
<DrRich3D01> there are no licensing fees...when you buy Enliven, then you may publish at will
<Sean72> I struggled to find more detail on the enliven product on your website - is there more detail available somewhere about what exactly it does?
<DrRich3D01> I invite you to visit www.Rich3D.com
<DrRich3D01> that is a wonderful site with examples, documentation from various perspectives, an active forum
<DrRich3D01> and more
<DrRich3D01> oh, and that is my company...a gathering of experts in the technology too
<DrRich3D01> we do various projects around the world to push the technology
<DrRich3D01> to deliver real world practical uses
<Lazette Gifford> What sort of websites to you think would be best served by buying the Cararra/Enliven programs?
<DrRich3D01> Our best conversations are with Technical Marketing folks...who have a new product to rollout and they
<DAZ_melissamae> to ask David a question, submit it as a private message to Questionbot in the upper right hand corner of the chat window.
<DrRich3D01> want to create a new experience a cutting edge experience
<DrRich3D01> which can explain and show the product
<DrRich3D01> to configure the product and see how it works
<DrRich3D01> there are some fun applications to this too...
<DrRich3D01> using Daz human forms for example...
<DrRich3D01> here is a really neat example from the Daz library...to the web in 32D
<DrRich3D01> oops 3D
<DrRich3D01> http://salesdemo.viewpoint.com/vla/asset/demo/866_203925/characters.html
<DrRich3D01> http://salesdemo.viewpoint.com/vla/asset/demo/866_203925/characters.html
<DrRich3D01> that is some great character animation
<DrRich3D01> and it is attention getting
<thebelovedalia> I've never heard of a program like Enliven. Is there a demo version?
<DrRich3D01> yes
<DrRich3D01> it will be officially release on the Daz site next week
<DrRich3D01> or you can look on Rich3D to see if it is available there now
<DrRich3D01> it will only work for 30 days,
<DrRich3D01> and you should be able to see the potential
<WillDupre> the big question for Poser and studio users is what is the legality of using DAZ content with this technology on the web
<DrRich3D01> .
<DrRich3D01> publish at will, there are no constraints when the content has been published through Enliven
<angusm> I've seen the product demos and while the technology is impressive - without intending to be rude - as a shopper, I find the experience much less so. I don't think the examples you showed tell me anything I couldn't already guess about those products. What can you add to those experiences to take them to the next level, to transform them from 'Uh-huh' to 'Ah-hah!'?
<DrRich3D01> yikes, you aren't rude,
<DrRich3D01> ok...I think something you don't know is that the content can actually jump out of the window without boundaries
<DrRich3D01> it is called Hyperview or Superview (the next version of the concept)
<DrRich3D01> the content casts shadows onto the whole desktop,is fully interactive
<DrRich3D01> and no other technology or software allows for this type of display
<DrRich3D01> you could create an avatar that responds to activity on the computer..let the imagination fly...
<DrRich3D01> this is new stuffr
<DAZ_melissamae> Thats all the time we have left for today! Thanks, David! We appreciate your being with us today.
<DrRich3D01> hey they are telling me that we are out if tune
<DrRich3D01> time
<DrRich3D01> not tune
<DrRich3D01> if you wish to add me as a friend here, then please do and ask me questions
<DrRich3D01> I will be back here in the featured chat area in a month or so too
<DrRich3D01> in closing, I challenge you to look closer at this and start thinking about what YOU can do to make your internet presentations better...
<DrRich3D01> your thoughts will grow
<DrRich3D01> ok bye
