Special Guest: Cris Palomino

<DAZ_Rhyno> Welcome everyone. We'd like to introduce you to Cris Palomino. A longtime friend to many of us.
<DAZ_Rhyno> You've seen Cris's work in magazines, books, and on Disney products around the world. She does a really mean... er, nice, Winnie the Pooh.
<DAZ_Rhyno> Due to the moderation, messages sent to Cris will not go through
<DAZ_Rhyno> To ask Cris a question, click on @QuestionBot in the right column of the chat.
<DAZ_Rhyno> We'll start with some things from Cris first, and then we'll stat passing your questions along. Ask good ones! :) Take it away Cris ~
<Cris Palomino> hello, everyone
<Cris Palomino>
<Cris Palomino> well, i hope some of you have had a chance to look at the hair tutorials
<Cris Palomino> as some of you know
<Cris Palomino> i'm a really big fan and user of painter
<Cris Palomino> i really enjoy painting hair among other things and i know so many people have trouble with that
<Cris Palomino> and it's really a matter of breaking down the hair into the way it lays on the head
<Cris Palomino> and knowing your tools
<Cris Palomino> in the tutorial, i used oil brushes, pencils, some blenders...and that's about it...very simple tools, but usually effective
<DAZ_Rhyno> After we're done we'll post up the links to the tutorials and a zip file of the "bald" Aiko above

<elwoodblues> What got you interested in Graphics?
<3D Universe> Cris, your art is awesome. What do you think was your "big break" in the art field?
<Cris Palomino> well, i've been drawing since the wee age of 3
<Cris Palomino> my high school teacher probably was the first to really take an interest in me becoming an artist
<Cris Palomino> much to the dismay of my family
<Cris Palomino> who thought i should be a secretary so i could get money to live on
<Cris Palomino> heh
<Cris Palomino> i've just always gravitated to art....even though i seriously meant to be a journalist
<Cris Palomino> my big break? well, i had some nice ones along the way, but it was really the day i went to visit a friend at disney
<Cris Palomino> and came home with a job there

<etherealink> what would you consider more important... experience or a degree in graphics to get into the industry?
<Cris Palomino> well, considering i don't have a degree...
<Cris Palomino> heh...i guess it would have to be experience
<Cris Palomino> but for some experience means schooling
<Cris Palomino> i did go to college and university, just didn't get a degree...but that was a personal choice
<Cris Palomino> when i got to disney...i was in consumer products...
<Cris Palomino> i met several well educated artists...a few who were like me without a degree...but we all cared most about...can you draw?
<Cris Palomino> that's really all that matters in any job

<Valandar> When working for Disney, what was your favorite and least favorite characters to draw?
<Cris Palomino> my favorites remain the milne characters, which were my specialty
<Cris Palomino> piglet is probably my favorite...but all the pooh characters
<Cris Palomino> i drew in both the disney animation style
<Cris Palomino> and was one of the few who also drew in the E. B. Shepherd style
<Cris Palomino> he was the original book illustrator...he also was known for Wind in the Willows
<Cris Palomino> least favorite
<Cris Palomino> hmmmm
<Cris Palomino> you know, i never got the hang of mickey
<Cris Palomino> of all things
<Cris Palomino> heh

<moonrancher> Can you tell us any of the Disney products you designed that we or our kids might own? :D
<Cris Palomino> well, i did things for mattel...i did bedding for springs and other companies...many things including watches for the disney stores, toothbrushes for oral b, blankets, i did a lot with a company called the first years
<Cris Palomino> i'm always surprised when people show me pictures of their kids
<Cris Palomino> and they're wearing something with something i drew

<Wopel> I would like to ask if your experience in Walt Disney has made something change in your drawing style
<Cris Palomino> it definitely had an influence on me
<Cris Palomino> i got to work with some of the most wonderful artists there
<Cris Palomino> who took the time to mentor me
<Cris Palomino> i studied the art of the greats...and got to meet...yippee...my idols like marc davis
<Cris Palomino> frank and ollie
<Cris Palomino> in studying the form of these characters, you begin to see how they breathe life into them
<Cris Palomino> gesture and storytelling
<Cris Palomino> i think i always had the ability to tell story, but it was honed at disney

<Steviet65> after viewing your gallery, how do you balance the dark with the Disney?
<Cris Palomino> easily...i draw secret dark disney pictures, too....*evil laugh*
<Cris Palomino> actually, i don't know of one disney artist that doesn't have a treasure trove of dark disney pics in their drawers
<Cris Palomino> i had one boss who worked at WB...he drew all the harry potter stuff and even had a minor character named for him
<Cris Palomino> he had these great pics of tweetie bird blowing his brains out and stuff

<ladyjasmine> I love your work! What inspires you?
<AlmightyQUEST> Other than working at disney, who or what else shaped your art "style" over time?
<Lynsh> cris, what if any, is your favourite art genre and why
<Cris Palomino> that depends on the mood i'm in..it can be something i read...it can be a movie i watched...often it's a story running through my head and then putting it down on paper
<Cris Palomino> art from the ages and around the world inspired me
<Cris Palomino> my favorite painter is waterhouse
<Cris Palomino> the pre-raphaelites, in general, are a real inspiration
<Cris Palomino> i love art nouveau
<Cris Palomino> its flowing lines
<Cris Palomino> that's pretty evident in some of my work, if you know that

<ladyjasmine> What made you move to digital art?
<Neyjour> When did you begin using digital media, and what program was your first?
<Cris Palomino> i became fascinated with computers when i saw the 1984 commercial for the macintosh
<Cris Palomino> i had to have one
<Cris Palomino> it looked so cool
<Cris Palomino> i got one and that actually led me into getting a commodore amiga
<DAZ_Kevin> Link to info on waterhouse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_William_Waterhouse
<Cris Palomino> man, these were the days of 8 colors available to you
<Cris Palomino> i remember the day we got 64
<Cris Palomino> i almost cried
<Cris Palomino> 64 whole colors to do my work with
<Cris Palomino> mind you, i was beginning to get into some tv and other graphics stuff with this
<Cris Palomino> we did the background graphics and animations for oingo boingo halloween concerts using the amiga
<Cris Palomino> the thing abou the amiga was that you could do animations on the fly
<Cris Palomino> a director said make changes and we did them on the spot
<Cris Palomino> other companies had to send out to SUN
<Cris Palomino> my first real program i used was deluxe paint from electronic arts
<Cris Palomino> i helped in the development of that fine little program by dan silva
<DAZ_Rhyno> To ask Cris a question, click on @QuestionBot in the right column of the chat.

<Phoenix1966> What makes you prefer Painter over the other 2D programs?
<3DFineArtist> I'm not familiar with painter. does that program have tools in it more advanced than photoshop and pretty close to what one can do with Fine art just about?
<Cris Palomino> painter is really about the only program that lets me paint with what looks like real materials
<Cris Palomino> there are two types of brushes in painter
<Cris Palomino> pixel based...these are like photoshop brushes
<Cris Palomino> you create an image that you capture and paint with it
<Cris Palomino> what makes them look like smooth lines is that the images are overlapping each other
<Cris Palomino> in painter you have a second type of brush called render based
<Cris Palomino> these brushes emulate the hairs on a brush and are not spacing dependant...
<Cris Palomino> then you add the ability to blend and interact with surface
<Cris Palomino> PS has in recent versions...
<Cris Palomino> added the ability to add texture to a brush
<Cris Palomino> but there is a smoothness to the blendability and the way color is laid down in painter that has been unrivaled
<Cris Palomino> photoshop is, at its heart, an image manipulator
<Cris Palomino> it excels at it
<Cris Palomino> and you can certainly create great art
<Cris Palomino> but it was created with the photographer in mind
<Cris Palomino> painter has always had the artist in mind
<Cris Palomino> and letting them paint with brushes the way you would on canvas and paper
<Cris Palomino> one of the first things about painter i noticed was it let you rotate the paper at will
<Cris Palomino> this is great because most artists have a comfort stroke...an angle they like to paint at...
<Cris Palomino> this is a big difference
<Cris Palomino> when i show people that, they go...how come PS doesn't do that
<Cris Palomino> i just heard the new version may have it
<Cris Palomino> only took them over a decade
<Cris Palomino> doh!

<brady228> I'm wondering here would you consider painter essentials ok to use for folks like me who can't afford painter, I mean here should that be ok in a pinch here? I ask because I'm mostly unsure of all te differences in the feature sets between the two and is why I ask here.
<Cris Palomino> painter essentials is a great way to start
<Cris Palomino> probably the reason they include it with wacom purchases
<Cris Palomino> it gives you a taste
<Cris Palomino> it's not full bodied like the full painter
<Cris Palomino> but neither is adobe photoshop essentials
<Cris Palomino> for some people these are all they will ever need...others will want more
<Cris Palomino> i suggest downloading the demo for painter
<Cris Palomino> it's fully functional for 60 days

<RHaseltine> Cris, you always stress storytelling in images but I've seen you do character pieces and scenes too - do they require a different approach, or do you still have a story there?
<DAZ_Rhyno> To ask Cris a question, click on @QuestionBot in the right column of the chat.
<Cris Palomino> everything has a story
<Cris Palomino> from a still life you set up
<Cris Palomino> to a portrait of someone
<Cris Palomino> take portraits
<Cris Palomino> the ones done by the masters
<Cris Palomino> this is the story of a person at a time in their life
<Cris Palomino> if you look at the portrait, you can tell what the artist wanted you to know
<Cris Palomino> by the demeanor of the subject
<Cris Palomino> by the elements they chose to portray them with
<Cris Palomino> when people do character studies
<Cris Palomino> they should be looking to represent who that person/character is just by the viewer looking at them

<dhenton9000> How is the CG workshop going for you? I'm teaching software on line as well, and wondered about your experience so far.
<Cris Palomino> oh, i am loving it
<Cris Palomino> the students are great and, man, do they keep me on my toes!
<Cris Palomino> i love to teach...always have
<Cris Palomino> my high school teacher saw that and made me her teaching assistant from my sophomore year on
<Cris Palomino> teaching is rewarding and challenging
<Cris Palomino> it makes you realize whether or not you know your stuff
<Cris Palomino> and students always think of something you didn't
<Cris Palomino> i always know more about what i'm teaching after the class ends than when it began

<Vadlor> Do you use a mouse or a tablet for painting the hair?
<DigitalMetal> I find it difficult to paint hair using a mouse. Is there any way to make it easier using a mouse?
<Vadlor> What would you recomend to avoid a diffence in contrast between the render and hair being painted?
<Dixie Rose> Can you maybe shed some light on why painted hair sometimes comes out blurry looking?
<Cris Palomino> i use a tablet...absolutely
<Cris Palomino> there are some programs that allow you to finesse what the mouse gives you, but understand, there is no pressure involved with the mouse
<Cris Palomino> a pen allows you to use a light touch or bear down
<Cris Palomino> painter, in particular, has a preference called brush tracking
<Cris Palomino> you actually go in and paint in the dialog window and it will set the pressure to your sensitivity
<Cris Palomino> and the cool thing is you can set the prefs for a project, for a facet of your project or in general
<Cris Palomino> if you want to take advantage...full advantage of either photoshop or painter, you need a tablet...graphires can be found for between $69 and $99...they're great little tablets

<Art5> Is there much difference between the lower and higher end wacom tablets/
<Cris Palomino> hopefully you mean the difference between something that looks painted on the render and one that looks like it beongs
<Cris Palomino> part of that is observation, the other is enough practice to make it look real
<Cris Palomino> art is a matter of observation...and then as artists, it is the application of that observation to the canvas
<Cris Palomino> observe hair in different photos...especially those in natural like
<Cris Palomino> hair isn't composed of one color
<Cris Palomino> no matter what the color is
<Cris Palomino> and it follows gravity
<Cris Palomino> and separates into locks
<Cris Palomino> observe the lighting in your render
<Cris Palomino> and match it as closely as you can
<Cris Palomino> blurry looking...to be honest, i'd need an example...maybe you can send me some after the chat...i would imagine it might be how the brushes work and how they lay down color
<Cris Palomino> there is for some artists...a big difference in the sensitivity of the tablets...between graphire and intuos
<Cris Palomino> between intuos 2 and 3
<Cris Palomino> i have an intuos 3
<Cris Palomino> they improved the surface and gave us mappable buttons...which is freakin cool
<DAZ_Rhyno> Ok, some last questions about "making it" in this field, and then Cris has a freebie for some lucky people here

<Dixie Rose> What would be your suggestions for a young person who has artistic talents? What would you suggest to further develop those talents?
<Cris Palomino> expose them to art
<Cris Palomino> all kinds
<Cris Palomino> let them read about the artists
<Cris Palomino> take them to museums, get them books
<Cris Palomino> have them experience life and make observations of the things around them
<Cris Palomino> from the way plants grow to what direction hair on the snout of their dog goes
<Cris Palomino> encourage them
<Cris Palomino> always encourage them
<Cris Palomino> if they love it, they'll keep doing it
<Cris Palomino> there are great programs available to kids in many cities
<Cris Palomino> get them a sketchbook and a good set of pencils
<Cris Palomino> if they draw everyday
<Cris Palomino> if they put their observations down on paper
<Cris Palomino> they will grow
<Cris Palomino> they will gain confidence
<Cris Palomino> and even if they never go into art
<Cris Palomino> they will have an appreciation and love for it and the world around them

<AutumnFantasy> What would be your greatest advice to aspiring digital artists. How do you advise us to get known?
<Cris Palomino> that's a hard one
<Cris Palomino> i know many good artists who have not "made it"
<Cris Palomino> have i made it?
<Cris Palomino> well, i'm somewhat known
<Cris Palomino> i get work doing art....that's a biggie
<Cris Palomino> perseverance
<Cris Palomino> that's a key element
<Cris Palomino> and the willingness to listen to criticism
<Cris Palomino> there will be those who don't know how to critique at all and will hurt your feelings
<Cris Palomino> but you'll run across those that really want to help you
<Cris Palomino> listen to them all
<Cris Palomino> in the end, if you're working for someone else...
<Cris Palomino> you'll need to know how to deal with them
<Cris Palomino> and if you work for someone else, you'll need to let go of ego

<TheAlex> And draw, draw, draw, every day ?
<Cris Palomino> you are there to do something for someone else
<Cris Palomino> you can't have any attachment
<Cris Palomino> though you can have pride in it
<Cris Palomino> and yes....draw draw draw
<Cris Palomino> everyday
<Cris Palomino> for the rest of your life
<Cris Palomino> an artist is a student forever
<Cris Palomino> these have been really great questions!
<Cris Palomino> where did you find all these people?
<DAZ_mattw> they're all stress test bots.

<Dolphins-Dreams> Oh fabulous thank you!
<TMTOMH_Productions> The children need the upgrade to the image gallery! When do they get it? Won't someone think of the children!?
<3DFineArtist> Cris, If you could just answer one last question, I would really appreciate it. does the same question exist even today as the cg world becomes more and more advanced. Are they still asking if you have fine art experience? Also would that help a lot when looking for a job in a studio?
<TMTOMH_Productions> :)
<Neyjour> Bye everyone! And thanks again for the great chat, Cris. :D
<darkphoenixrising> Thanks Cris, be safe in the night and always everyone.
<Risika75> patience is a virtue.. or so I am told :)
<AestheticDemon> heh
<Risika75> it usually takes a few hours for things like that to show up
<Knight-Templar> BluesDragon, i have painte Xi and photoshop 7 which one is better, i have not really workd with painter?
<Vadlor> Patiente.... how long does it take? :)
<JWideman> But we've been counted, right?
<Cris Palomino> 3dfa...most places now really want an educated artist...they want to see a degree
<Cris Palomino> but a good place will look at any good artist regardless
<TMTOMH_Productions> Thanks again, Cris! You have been VERY informative and have provided a great experience for all of us!
<3DFineArtist> ok thankyou. but experience helps too I'm sure.
<Cris Palomino> so it's good to have a degree but more important to be able to draw/paint
<Dolphins-Dreams> Does anyone have an idea what a good starter grpahics program is for children?
<Cris Palomino> thanks, tmtomh
<danaL> goodbye all and thanks for the chat, its 4.30am here lol
<DarkMindBurning> I've started one of my children on Terragen.
<Dolphins-Dreams> I am looking to introduce my daughter into digital painting... she is 12 now
<Dolphins-Dreams> danaL now THATS dedication ;)
<danaL> yep for sure lol
<Kharum> a box of crayons
<danaL> its ausssie time
<danaL> night all
<3DFineArtist> Thankyou. It was nice to hear from someone that has had experience in the field.
<Dolphins-Dreams> DarkMind, i cant even wrap my brain around that one lol
<JWideman> I think it might be better to start with pencil and paper
<Cris Palomino> dd...contact me and i'll see if i can find some good kids art programs...but kharum said it
<Cris Palomino> crayons
<Robin Wood> Thanks again, Cris. Bye, everyone!
<Cris Palomino> they were my first tools
<Dolphins-Dreams> LOL Kharum, there is an idea..
<Cris Palomino> bye, robin...hugs
<BluesDragon> KT I know PS7 somewhat but wondering if it is worth it to learn painter instead since I am still really basic in PS
<DarkMindBurning> Terragen, Free 3D program. Landscapes.
<TMTOMH_Productions> Have a wonderful day, everyone!
<lladnar> Terragen is a good program and fairly simple to use, but may be too complex of a learning curve for most small children...
<Dolphins-Dreams> I was thinking Paint Shop Pro maybe...
<JWideman> 1) it's cheaper 2) it's much more portable 3) learning the techniques as well as the software might be rather daunting
<AlmightyQUEST> bye charles
<Kharum> they where my first too but, they didn't do me much good
<Dolphins-Dreams> it seems primitive enough compared to the bigger programs
<silverspirit> might have been answered already but ill ask anyway.... i havent been able to watch ur tuts as of yet Cris only b/c they wont load for me :( takes way long time... is there a link to download an .rar or .zip of the tuts
<Cris Palomino> thanks again for coming everyone
<Kharum> I'm still trying to produce something worth anything
<DarkMindBurning> Thanks for having us. :)
<Dolphins-Dreams> Silver... right click on the ones and save them to your HD?
<Cris Palomino> silverspirit...not at the moment
<rmash1948> You're welcome, Cris. Thanks for being here.
<savanna> Thank you Cris
<lladnar> thanks Chris, sorry I was late :-(
<Cris Palomino> i tried to make them smaller chunks, but even those are about 25 mb
<Cris Palomino> np lladnar
<Dolphins-Dreams> Kharum thats an issue I have as well.... it looks good in the moment and 4 weeks later i wonder what on earth i was thinking..
<savanna> and i understund not so good iàm german
<savanna> sorry
<elwoodblues> Well, gotta go get some more sleep for work tonight, Thanks again Cris for the interesting chat, later everyone
<BluesDragon> silverspirit, I am on a PC and IE. I just right clicked save as on them and saved to my hard drive and they run fine
<Cris Palomino> i'll see if we can zip them and if it makes a difference
<Dolphins-Dreams> Hallo Savanna ;)
<Cris Palomino> you're welcome
<savanna> but i like the chat
<Cris Palomino> k, later, guys
<rhidragon> Thanks Cris, learned a lot by just watching your tutorials
<Terrielee> Cris, I'm sorry I spelled your name wrong! Mine always gets spelled wrong! Lol... Thanks so much for this interview! :) One final question... Is it hard to get a job in CG if you are "older"? Like... over 46? =:O
<Kharum> stuff I think is great no one else likes
<Vadlor> well, I`m going now, see yaaround!
<silverspirit> i tried and it didnt worky.... i might have to dumb down my firewall to do soo... thanks for the tuts... i hope to be able to watch them by doin that... Thanks :)
<savanna> hi Dolphins
<WildlyfeImages> I found I had to download the latest version of Quicktime to get the tutorials to work.
<darthuv> Thaanks again
<ladyjasmine> Cris, you are really an inspiration!
<Cris Palomino> thanks again....terrielee...that's a hard one to answer
<AlmightyQUEST> bye cris, and thanks again
<Kharum> I'm sure you have the same problem
<Cris Palomino> you should always try, but it may be difficult if you have no experience
<Cris Palomino> good luck if that is your goal
<dhenton9000> chris, is there a link to the hair tutorials someplace?
<Cris Palomino> yeah, dh
<Fringewood> I like the QT tutorials. I hope that others will follow in your footsteps with similar presentations.
<Cris Palomino> go to the page with the chat info
<Cris Palomino> they have them listed there
<Cris Palomino> bye, everyone
<AuroraSmith> *E*
* AuroraSmith wanders away briefly, wondering if it is safe to leave...

<BluesDragon> ttl cris
<Orchid Noir> bye and thank you
<Risika75> bye cris
<savanna> bey cris...oh to late
<Nester751> Bye Neyjour!
<rhidragon> me go bye bye
<savanna> i wish you all a good day or night....bye
<Knight-Templar> Lost the connection for a minute, back in though
<Terrielee> Thanks Cris for your honesty and a great interview! Take good care! C'ya! :)
<ladyjasmine> I think its over, Cris has left the room
<LeggyBlond> 'Time For Tea Said' Zebedee - Goodnight
<Splurt> did I miss it?
<ladyjasmine> Yes, its over. Cris checked out about 5 minutes ago
<MacDubhgal> Cris just left...
<Splurt> argh!
<MacDubhgal> Postmortem... Thanks Cris! had a great time... Bye folks!
<wyrdwing> sure is getting quiet now
<Nester751> Good night Elwood, Vadlor!
<Splurt> wonder if i still get the 800 piccy upload...
<wyrdwing> was that actually true?
<Nester751> Yes, I was late in may responses....
<Btara Ktahn> *thought everyone would've left by now :o)
<Nester751> I think the 800 picture is humor...
<wyrdwing> question strikes again :-)
<Btara Ktahn> wonder if I can upload my 'rosity comics there :o)
<LeChatDesigns> Just checking. Anybody here into Rockstar: Supernova?
<Nester751> Ah, finally off the phone. Now I can type and email without distractions... :D
<profotograf> well that didn't sound like it when DAZ_Biggie was talking about it yesterday night.
<AuroraSmith> bye all...gotta go!
<wyrdwing> a scam to lure people in :-) and it worked!
<Btara Ktahn> byebye
<Nester751> It would be a nice feature. I wonder if it will be a paid feature like renderosity galleries?
<Nester751> Bye Arurasmith!
<Btara Ktahn> we have to pay to use renderosity's galleries?!
<AestheticDemon> whats that about rendo's galleries and payment?
<Nester751> Not a big fan of the reality tv shows, LeChat. Renderosity charges to increase the size and number of posting per day.
<Btara Ktahn> oh.
<Btara Ktahn> *has just been getting along with the 1 image/24 hours thing
<Nester751> Sorry, Btara, hit the return key early before finishing.
<Corona> bye
<LeChatDesigns> I don't watch much TV, period, but I love live music performances.
<Nester751> Lots of talented people on the Supernova show though.
<Btara Ktahn> *liked Who Wants To Be A Superhero
<Btara Ktahn> which is sad because it's the only 'reality' show i've ever seen :o)
<Splurt> a scam??? just to lure me in here? well, that didn't work did it? because I came too late... haha...
<Nester751> I missed that one. Stan Lee, right?
<Btara Ktahn> *doesn't watch reality shows because there's just not anything real in them. they're all scripted crap
<Btara Ktahn> yep :o)
<Nester751> Still, Stan can be a lot of fun with his enthusiam...
<LeChatDesigns> Gotta love a program that gives Stan Lee a place.
<Btara Ktahn> C.O.P.S is probably the only one that's got anything real in it.
<Btara Ktahn> i liked Stan's work in Mallrats
<Btara Ktahn> and the Marvel comics movies :o)
<Nester751> Loved his cameos in the Marvel movies! Missed Mallrats though...
<Btara Ktahn> *hated The Hulk movie, but liked the cameo with stan and lou ferigno as security guards chatting with each other
<Nester751> That was great!
<Nester751> Very funny!
<Btara Ktahn> wow... you must've been the other person in the theater, huh? :o)
<Btara Ktahn> *thought it was just her and the crickets
<Nester751> I was the only one who laughed at recognizing him and Lou
<LeChatDesigns> That's so much to pick out stuff like that, Nester.
<Nester751> I like the funny little things. There were a few people. Marvel is doing a second Hulk movie. Less Jeckyle and Hyde.
<Btara Ktahn> anyone notice that Stan is usually trying to rescue a small child in his cameos? :o)
<Btara Ktahn> Hi bob!!
<Nester751> Yes, that's a good one! There's also some that are extras on the DVDs not in the films.
<LeChatDesigns> I love watching movies for sneaky cameos and walk-ons.
<Nester751> Hello Bob!
<Nester751> Me too.
<Bob Coleman> *E*
* Bob Coleman waves

<Nester751> I like looking for little errors like extras in medival movies wearing watches. :D *waves back at Bob*
<Btara Ktahn> *likes watching movies with the commentaries turned on* "I think my favorite is Curse of the Black Pearl with the Kiera Knightly commentary"
<Btara Ktahn> I was pretty disappointed in the Mel Brooks commentary for Spaceballs. :o(
<Nester751> I haven't heard the commentary yet, was it funny? Some commentaries can be deadly dull.
<Nester751> Big Trouble in Little China was mostly "How's the wife and kids? What grades are they in? Although there were funny moments"
<Btara Ktahn> there are 3 different ones in Curse of the Black Pearl... the johnny depp one is good, but the one with Elizabeth and Norrington is better :o)
<Nester751> I'll have to listen to that this weekend.
<Btara Ktahn> i dont have Big Trouble in little China on dvd yet. *is tryin to slowly phase out her vhs collection for dvds
<Calalene> oooo, there's a Norrington one? I really like him, especially after the second movie.
<mors_d> *E*
* mors_d heards the anoles back to the boulder and gets them to move back to 'normal' chat...

<Btara Ktahn> i liked the one for Underworld, but it's pretty hard to understand what that black actor is saying during it because his voice is just so low
<Btara Ktahn> the actor who played norrington and the actress who played elizabeth have one of the commentaries on PotC: Curse of the Black Pearl :o)
<Nester751> Kate Beckensale's commentaries on Underworld are funny.
<Btara Ktahn> i love her character :o)
<Fringewood> I just checked my gallery, and I now have 870 images to go before I limit out. = ]
<Btara Ktahn> i havent seen the 2nd underworld with commentaries, yet
<LeChatDesigns> mors, lol! I'd be more like one of those meerkats. :)
<Btara Ktahn> yay fringe!
<Btara Ktahn> *doesnt know how many she has
<Calalene> I'll have to dig out the dvd... we've watched the movie, but none of the "extras"
<Nester751> Excellent Fringewood!
<Fringewood> so they upped it from 30 to 900
<Btara Ktahn> probaly 828 or however many the LAME-Os like me get who aren't platinum club members
<Nester751> I have to upload a bunch.
<wyrdwing> doesn't have 800 of anything :(
<Btara Ktahn> so, get anything cool from the Pro Club sale this weekend? :o)
<Fringewood> now the question is whether or not they'll feel sorry for everyone who didn't attend and give everyone 900....
<Nester751> What other cameos have you found LetChatDesigns?
<Btara Ktahn> *welcomes wyrdwing to the ranks of the LAME-Os!
<Nester751> I missed the Pro Club Sale :(
<wyrdwing> at least my connection didn't die :-)
<Btara Ktahn> :o)
<Btara Ktahn> so, you're a slightly better LAME-O than me!
<Nester751> The clear chat helped me. My connection slowed to a crawl.
<wyrdwing> i guess :-)
<Lilliana> Oh man I missed it?
<Nester751> Lame-o sounds like a cereal...hahaha
<Btara Ktahn> the chat or the sale, lilliana?
<Nester751> Sorry Liliana. It was a good chat.
<Lilliana> The Chat.
<Btara Ktahn> *had a basket full of Pro Club stuff all weekend and kept taking out some things and replacing them with others because she just couldn't decide what she wanted :o)
<Nester751> Yes, it will be posted later, and in German too.
<Nester751> Although Cris is answering a few questions emailed to her.
<Lilliana> That's what I get for dealing with the School department
<Fringewood> to go to regular chat room
<Nester751> Yes, my wishlist looks like that too, Btara
<Btara Ktahn> anyone have a complete People In Chat list? mine's only had 2 people in it all the time I've been here. *has a crappy connection*
<Nester751> Dealing with the school department?
<Nester751> Hmmm/
<Nester751> I show about 20.
<Calalene> I dunno how many are in the list, but it's more than 2 by a good bit
<Calalene> ok, 38 in my list
<Btara Ktahn> i just see daz kevin and daz rhyno... neither of which i would private message since they'd probably boot me for whatever i said :o)
<wyrdwing> my list keeps adding more people on the reload
<Nester751> Questionbot is there. Hey, Steve is still here!
<Nester751> Thanks again for last week's chat Steve!
<Btara Ktahn> yay steve! ... which steve? :o|
<Btara Ktahn> oh, that steve.
<Btara Ktahn> yay steve!
<Nester751> 3d Universe.
<wyrdwing> i think questionbot is having a break from being picked on
<Nester751> Missed saying goodbye to Bob.
<Btara Ktahn> steve, any word from that person I messaged for you earlier?
<Nester751> Opps, bumped off.
<Btara Ktahn> nester, there's a pack of .fc2 faces for AikoToon at that japanese Poserclub.jp site :o)
<Nester751> Excellent! Thank you Btara! :D
<wyrdwing> have you tried them out :-) *has them on her list of things to install*
<Btara Ktahn> not yet. I've been too busy today to do much more than look around and log in here
<Btara Ktahn> i'm going to try and make a grab for my final M3 armor file from my daz account tonight. *has only successfully gotten files 1 and 2 so far*
<Nester751> Was anyone's connection slowed by last weeks two storms and rolling blackouts (in the California area?)
<Btara Ktahn> hi!
<Nester751> Hello AzureBlue!
<wyrdwing> wonders why the men on her tv are shaving with peanut butter, ketchup and cream....
<Zwille> *E*
* Zwille waves

<AzureBlue> yeah, Nester
<Btara Ktahn> no (since i don't live there), but the temperatures have dropped 20 degrees in this area. it's been nice :o)
<Btara Ktahn> i was curious as to why california was having an energy crisis, then remembered taht the hippies had them shut down most of their nuclear power plants.
<Btara Ktahn> *that
<Zwille> Have a nice evening and byyyeee! :)
<Btara Ktahn> byebye :o)
<Nester751> I read that the power company was splicing (bye 2wille!!) lines
<AzureBlue> bye
<Nester751> and accidently cut an active line,
<Nester751> causing a series of rolling blackouts throughout parts of the state.
<AzureBlue> was anyone hurt
<Nester751> Not the power company employees, but others due to the blackout
<Btara Ktahn> rolling blackout ran over a family of 3, but i dont think anyone was injurred.
<wyrdwing> normally where i am builders cause blackouts because they cut the wrong wire
<Btara Ktahn> where you are, people shave with peanut butter and ketchup, too.
<Btara Ktahn> *sees the place where wyrdwing lives as having all of those village idiots from Monty Python around
<Nester751> That happened here too, with peanut butter and ketchup....
<Nester751> And knights that say Ni!
<Btara Ktahn> Hi!!
<Btara Ktahn> Welcome to my nightmare :o)
<Nester751> Hello!
<wyrdwing> hehe :-) wouldn't be without the idiots
<waningmoon> hi
<Btara Ktahn> *is going to wind up boring herself to death because she can't wake up :o(
<Btara Ktahn> Oh! must upload those gecky & cammy cartoons i did to my new improved and hopefully much larger artzone gallery!
<wyrdwing> yay :-)
<Btara Ktahn> so maybe they'll get viewings here since no one at renderosity seems interested in looking at them... which is sad because the 2nd one's Funny! :o)
<Tropical Fool> Just watched Holy Grail again yesterday-serendipity. I salute the knights who say Ni!
<Nester751> Ni!
<Nester751> And the hedges!
<AestheticDemon> shrubberies
<waningmoon> did someone say "herring"?
<Btara Ktahn> Yay! I may upload 872 more image(s) 5 at a time
<Nester751> That's right!
<wyrdwing> i don't have an more images to upload.... i am cursed :-(
<Nester751> I don't think I have 872 images...
<Nester751> Or parrots.
<waningmoon> do test renders count?
<Btara Ktahn> "someday, lad... all this will be yours!"... "what, the curtains?"
<Nester751> I especially like the holy hand grenade.
<Btara Ktahn> dunno
<Nester751> I would think anything uploaded would count.
<Nester751> 872 frames of an avi....hmmmm.
<Btara Ktahn> uploaded 1 at a time!
<Btara Ktahn> you have to click through the gallery FAST to see them move :o)
<Nester751> LOL would that be stop motion animation then?
<Nester751> Or a weird flip book animation?
<Dennis_Reed> I loose track of time so quickly!
<Dennis_Reed> Is criss still on?
<Nester751> Sorry, Dennis, Cris's chat ended already.
<Btara Ktahn> hours ago
<Btara Ktahn> we're just too lazy to bother leaving this room :o)
<Nester751> Daz increased the number of images that can be posted though.
<Dennis_Reed> LOL! Shakes head and leaves!
<Nester751> We're in a room? Ahhhhh!
<Btara Ktahn> it was really nice of them :o)
<Btara Ktahn> *is testing out her new gallery space as they type!
<Nester751> Yes!
<Nester751> Multi tasking...
<LeChatDesigns> Bye, it's back to the pixel factory with me :)
<Nester751> Bye LeChat! It was wonderful to meet you!
<wyrdwing> starts to think btara is teasing because she'll be last to get her 800 spaces :-)
<Nester751> lol
<Khai> what spaces?
<waningmoon> bye all
<wyrdwing> even at this moment i'm at the bottom of the chat list XD
<Nester751> Bye waningmoon!
<Nester751> I wish I'd thought more when I picked my nickname. I'm stuck in the middle. :D
<Nester751> Hello Elliandra!
<AestheticDemon> hey i have a name with A as the first letter and i dont have new gallery spaces, so its not just you wyrdwing
<Elliandra> Ok so I missed the chat session go figure *rolls eyes* is anyone else getting the green screen thing when they try to watch the q-time tutorial videos? I am getting it starting with the second one I get like 5 seconds of picture teh screen goes green then it's audio only...
<Khai> ???
<Nester751> My last name starts with an A so I got tired of being an early letter.
<Elliandra> Hiya Nester *grins*
<wyrdwing> i get a white screen and say i'm missing something. I guess i haven't updated qt for a while.
<Nester751> Cris said you might need the newest version of Quicktime. Which do you have?
<Elliandra> Ahh that might explain it I am dl'ing the new version right now lol
<Btara Ktahn> i'll probably read the Daz_Victoria things more closely now. *wouldn't have come here if she hadn't bothered to read the note this time
<Btara Ktahn> yay! *uploads her salute to Gekky & Cammy cartoons!*
<Btara Ktahn> only the bloody thing uploaded them in the wrong blasted order! :o(
<Btara Ktahn> it's got 3 where 2 should be
<Btara Ktahn> don't think i'll use the Mass Upload option of 5 at a time anymore and just stick with the one file per upload each time from now on
<Nester751> Hello Btara!
<Btara Ktahn> testing
<Rendermancer> Looks like I missed the whole chat dealing with somebody elses 'crisis' here at work.
<Nester751> The newest version of quicktime might cause your copy of Poser 6 to start a little slower...
<wyrdwing> there's a user without a name! O_o
<Btara Ktahn> hey, it fixed the people in chat list! *can see all the way down to wyrdwing now*
<Nester751> Where?
<Nester751> O_o?
<wyrdwing> unless it was you nester posting ^_^;
<AestheticDemon> the nameless person who said ,.testing
<Elliandra> okies gotta restart my pc now lol later all *grins*
<Nester751> Hello Rendermancer
<Nester751> Oh.
<Nester751> Missed saying goodbye to Elliandra...rats.
<Btara Ktahn> like they care :o)
<AestheticDemon> just before btara quit and rejoined
<Btara Ktahn> *E*
* Btara Ktahn didn't quit... the laggy chat quitted her!

<Nester751> Some do. Plus we do get bumped off.
<Btara Ktahn> hey, i can see questionbot now!
<Btara Ktahn> *E*
* Btara Ktahn wonders if it's too late to get her questions in for the chat :o)

<wyrdwing> i don't believe for one second that questionbot has been online for that long.
<Rendermancer> There does seem to be a bit of lag on the chat, or is that just me?
<Btara Ktahn> there always is.
<Nester751> It's kind of long.
<AzureBlue> bye
<AestheticDemon> hmmm wheres my gallery upgrade? i know i got bounced out just before the chat started, but i was here at the end... :-(
<Btara Ktahn> it's cruddy software, buy i guess it's better than letting a hundred people into an irc chat and hoping none of them will try and take advantage of people's IP numbers
<Btara Ktahn> *E*
* Btara Ktahn outlasted kevin! yay!

<Nester751> Opps, still didn't get the gallery upgrade either, not that I can see.
<Rendermancer> Anything is better than IRC
<Nester751> How does it display that you got the upgrade?
<Btara Ktahn> i just logged into my account and did the Gallery upload thingy. it said i had over 800 images that i could upload, 5 at a time
<Btara Ktahn> Hi!
<Nester751> Wow! Mine still says 26. Bummer.
<Nester751> Hello, Crikett
<Nester751> Hello Shadowfire87
<crikett> Hi Nester
<Btara Ktahn> well, talk to the DAZ_dudes about it
<Btara Ktahn> i was afraid i might ping out before they did the census
<AestheticDemon> ahha log out then back in
<Nester751> How are you crikett
<shadowfire87> Hello All
<Btara Ktahn> no! that would be TOO EASY!
<AestheticDemon> doesnt update while you are logged in
<AestheticDemon> i just lo/li and its there
<Nester751> Hello shadowfire87
<Btara Ktahn> it updated for me, but then, I just did an Open In New Window thing when i was going to the gallery
<crikett> doing pretty good - how are you?
<Btara Ktahn> I'm super! Thanks for asking!
<Nester751> Excellent! Thank you :D
<Rendermancer> I need to upload to my gallery. There's only 3 or 4 there and 1,000s on my graphics PC
<shadowfire87> can anyone tell me what the null feature in Studio is for? It is not in the manual.
<Nester751> I have a few I burned off onto DVD storage.
<AestheticDemon> ds nulls, its just a dummy object, you can parent a bunch of stuff to it and move em all together
<AestheticDemon> or use em as 'point at' targets
<Nester751> Thanks AestheticDemon
<AestheticDemon> or for doing articulations, the prop is parented to a null at an offset, thats parented to another null at an offset, etc
<AestheticDemon> sortta like rigging a figure
<Btara Ktahn> i really hate this chat software. does that make me a bad person?
<shadowfire87> Thanks for the knowledge AestheticDemon
<AestheticDemon> no problem
<Btara Ktahn> hi!
<wyrdwing> yay 800!
<Rendermancer> Thanks AestheticDemon. I have always used a primative and then made it invisible
<Nester751> That's what I did too, Rendermancer.
<AestheticDemon> also usefull for solving 'gimbal lock'
<AestheticDemon> just move a null to the same point as the prop and parent
<AestheticDemon> that way the null acts like an extra set of scale/translate/rotate dials
<Rendermancer> I copied the technique from Poser. It never occured to me that DS had a feature for it.
<Btara Ktahn> is it true? does the latest version of DS open .pz3 files now?
<Nester751> How often is the DS manual get updated?
<AestheticDemon> did last time i looked
<Btara Ktahn> yay!
<AestheticDemon> ds manual? dont even download it
<Btara Ktahn> *thinks she'll try getting the latest update, then
<Nester751> Really?
<AestheticDemon> it was last updated that i know of, back around 0.9.26
<AestheticDemon> except for the marketing secions
<AestheticDemon> sections
<Nester751> I knew about the.pz3. had to update for the various plug ins.
<Btara Ktahn> i usually just ask people who use it how to use it since the manual wasn't much help. :o)
<AestheticDemon> get ds 1.3.1.0, its far far more reliable and usable that 1.2, 1.2.0.1, or 1.3.0.1
<Btara Ktahn> *E*
* Btara Ktahn 's still on 1.2.0.1

<AestheticDemon> and they restored the morph spawning from dforms
<Btara Ktahn> Hi!
<Btara Ktahn> ... or not :o(
