My third attempt at a blog - normally what happens is I get going, then the host site shuts down, so I guess it's curtains for ArtZone.
More coming soon.
Eeek! Nothing posted since last November... OK - must do better .....
Just a little note to say I have recently completed some little portraits to use as examples for commissions on etsy.com (see http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=7369553), one of which is of ArtZone's very own xmas-kitty ..... bet you thought it would never happen, hon ... now if only I'd had a better resolution photo to work from than your old profile shot...

The dragon plaques which I designed last year have now been realised by Mid Wales sculptor Sue Thornton and are attached to various public buildings in my home town of Llanidloes, Mid Wales. Batch 1:

A new painting completed - and not before time, you may well say ....

The background created using XenoDream and Bryce/Poser - printed onto canvas, sealed, and then overpainted with the foreground figure in oils and egg-tempera.
Original size 20" x 30". Larger version in the gallery page.
Enjoy... Martin

Well - another month, another entry... Only a short one. For the last month or so I've been mainly occupied with visitors, and doing a 30 hour intensive one-to-one Spanish course (elementary level). I reach the end of that on Thursday, and then I need to practice a lot...
Therefore... I have decided I will start making more frequent blog entries, and attempt to translate them in Spanish - ha! That should be entertaining! So, any native Spanish speakers out there who would like to correct my Spanish, feel free. We will see how long this lasts....
--------------------------
¡Vaya!

Time to post some new artwork - hot off the drawing boards this week.....
This (and the following post) are part of a commission - a selection of my dragon designs which are currently being modelled in 3D (that's 3D with clay, not 3D with pixels :-) by sculptor Sue Thornton in Wales - they will be cast in resin and mounted on the walls of various buildings around town - the focus of a 'discovery trail' for young visitors who will have to follow clues to find all the dragons and identify them by name... (or something like that).
Anyway - this should keep things going until I have something more impressive to post. These are done in red chalk with white gouache highlights on watercolour paper hand-prepared with red egg tempera wash. Just like Leonardo would have used ! Shame I can't quite draw as well :-)
Hope you like dragons!

Hi all...
I wasn't going to start writing anything of any significance to this blog until my new 'comfy-to-sit-on-the-sofa-with' laptop arrives (hopefully later this week), but I was thinking something last night which I thought I would just jot down here before I forget it:
Question: In an age of instant communications and faultless reproductions of art, is it possible fora new movement in painting to happen?
Notice I specifically say 'painting' rather than 'art', as all sorts of new media movements have sprung up and will constantly do so - video installations, concept art, performance art, internactive internet applications, etc. etc. I would also include both 3D and 2D still digital art as new movements which encompass hordes of whole different 'schools' within themselves. What I am asking myself, however is, with 'traditional' 2D media - is it any longer possible to start a new movement, a new school of painting/drawing, or have we quite literally seen it all?
Has anything happened in painting since abstract expressionaism, moderism, impressionism, etc. or was the late 19th and the 20th century the last gasp of painting as an artform which could be in any way 'new'. When the impressionists first exhibited, there were gasps of horror - I'm guessing it was the same when Lichtenstein came along, or Pollock: - but what could we do now with paint that would be any different to everything which has gone before? Has everything already been tried ?
Discuss!
(Oh, and here's another picture, just in case all those words were too boring :-)

I've uploaded some more music to my profile page here: artzone.daz3d.com/index.php. "Spirit of the Wood" isn't currently available online anywhere (I'm working on it), but if you'd like a copy of the CD, please email me.
And some more art to the gallery - a mixture of traditional and digital stuff. Prints available via www.spiritvisions.com
Have fun!

I-ve now put a track from my Native American Flute album 'Spirit of the Wood' up on my profile page, just to show it's not all art. More coming soon, but that's positively it for today, OK? Just follow the 'spiritvisions' link at the bottom of this box.
Happy listening
